SPORTS: Fast times for North Olympic Discovery Marathon events

PORT ANGELES — Maybe it was the cool, accommodating weather. Maybe it was because the Hood Canal Bridge opened early.

For whatever reason, the seventh annual North Olympic Discovery Marathon and Half-Marathon featured some of the fastest times in the history of the races Sunday.

Port Townsend’s Ian Fraser, who already held the men’s half-marathon record before it fell Sunday, almost broke the 26.2-mile marathon mark while the women’s marathon record fell by a little more than a second.

Margreet Dietz of Squamish, British Columbia, ran the 2009 marathon in 3 hours, 10 minutes and 39.8 seconds, just beating the old mark of 3:10.50 by Lori Buratto of Spokane Valley in 2007.

Dietz, 38, was running her 11th marathon, and it was her first win. Her previous best finish was ninth place five weeks ago in the Vancouver marathon.

She also ran 3:10 in Vancouver but her best overall time of 3:07.10 — which would have shattered the North Olympic mark — was in Victoria last year.

This was the first time she ran two marathons so close together. Normally she would have waited six months before trying another marathon.

But an Australian triathlete friend advised that Dietz get right back in the saddle and quickly run another marathon.

So Dietz signed up for the North Olympic Discovery race that runs between Sequim and Port Angeles on the North Olympic Discovery Trail.

“The course is really beautiful,” Dietz said.

She said she was looking forward to the 20-mile mark because on-line information said there were no more hills after 20 miles. But she remembers one short but steep hill right after 20 miles.

Dietz’s husband, Tim Moore, and their 6-month-old puppy, Luka, also were at the marathon.

“He’s one happy puppy, this was his first time across the border,” she said about Luka.

Ginger Gruber of Port Orchard earned her second runner-up finish at North Olympic Discovery in as many years by following Dietz across the finish line.

A Marathon Maniac, Gruber was participating in her 23rd marathon. The 39-year-old has her two best finishes in the Sequim-to-Port Angeles race.

“This course is awesome,” she said. “The volunteers are outstanding and the weather is perfect. I love the trails.”

It’s not an easy course, Gruber said.

“The course has big hills but they’re short,” she said. “The scenery and the volunteers make up for the hills.”

Gruber came in second by passing Portland’s Sarah West about mile 19.

“She got me just as I was starting to go down a long downhill,” West said.

“You got me going,” West said to Gruber as the two runners talked near the finish line.

West, 33, talked her husband, Patrick, into running his first and maybe only marathon in the Sequim-to-Port Angeles race.

“He’s a triathlete, and he wanted to try at least one marathon,” West said.

7-year-old wonder

In perhaps a first for the area half-marathon, 7-year-old Alisandra Baccus of Port Angeles officially was the youngest runner in the 2009 13.1-mile race.

The cute-as-a-button blonde girl ran across the finish line accompanied by her mother, Jessica. Her older brother, 11-year-old Elijah, also competed in the race.

Both Elijah and Alisandra attend Franklin Elementary School.

Jessica, who has now competed in five half-marathons, ran her first one in Port Angeles. The area marathon helped get her interested in foot races, she said.

“This marathon here has been great for our family, and for other families here,” Jessica Baccus said.

Her children’s school also has done its share of encouraging grade-school students to run, Jessica said.

“Franklin promotes the Kids Marathon race,” she said.

The Kids Marathon is was held on Saturday.

Men’s race

Fraser, who holds the half-marathon record with a time of 1:11:44 in 2005, almost became the owner of the marathon mark Sunday.

The 35-year-old Port Townsend resident won the 2009 marathon in 2:36:02.4, just missing the record of 2:35.47 by Preston Brahsers of Renton in 2006.

Runner-up was Seattle’s Aaron Ladd, who was competing in his first marathon.

The 26-year-old athlete said the course was challenging.

“It was pretty tough for 16 to 21 miles,” he said. “It had some tough hills and twisty turns. I had to slow down on some of the turns.

“The final along the waterfront was beautiful.”

Another runner caught up with Ladd at about 23 or 24 miles.

“I did not let him past me,” Ladd said.
