SPORTS: Forks softball takes doubleheader; other prep reports

OCEAN SHORES — Tabetha Brock knocked a three-run homer out of the park in the first game and Jillian Raben pitched a 12-strikeout one-hitter in the second game to spark Forks to a doubleheader nonleague win over North Beach.

The Spartans captured the first contest 15-0 in five innings, and then claimed an 11-1 five-inning win in the nightcap.

Brock, the left-fielder, hit her three-RBI homer in the fourth inning as the Spartans took a dominating 9-0 lead after scoring four in the first.

The game ended because of the 10-run mercy rule in the fifth after Forks scored six more runs.

Sabrina Collins went the distance for the Spartans, striking out six while spreading out five hits.

Forks rapped out eight hits in the game.

Home team North Beach took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game but the Spartans quickly took control with eight runs in the second.

Raben fanned 12 batters while pitching the one-hitter.

Courtnie Paul caught both games for the Spartans.

Forks third baseman Emily Klahn had a 1.000 on-base percentage and five hits combined through both games.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders continue their hot streak.

A day after shocking rival Sequim with seven runs in the seventh inning after trailing 5-1 and winning 8-5, Port Angeles gave Bremerton its first loss in the Olympic League with a 7-5 victory.

The Riders improve to 6-4 and are in a logjam for third place in league with Olympic and North Mason.

Port Angeles next plays Olympic at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Silverdale on Monday starting at 4:15 p.m.

Bremerton now is 8-1 in league and 9-4 overall while North Kitsap is in second at 6-2 (10-3 overall).

The Riders won despite having eight errors in the game.

“We played a horrible first four innings before turning it around in the fifth,” Port Angeles coach Chad Wagner said.

“I felt like we should have been in control of the game from inning one but our defense held us back.”

Wes Giddings threw five innings, giving up five runs, just one earned, while striking out two and earning the win

Zach Lovik came in and pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

“Giddings did a fine job and would have probably thrown a complete game if it wasn’t for him having to get four outs an inning,” Wagner said about the errors.

“All in all, I am still proud of my boys for their complete turn-around.”

Lovik had a pinch-hit double in the fifth to give the Riders their first two runs of the game.

Marcus Konopaski was 2 for 3 with two runs scored while Ryan Mudd was 2 for 3 with a walk and Brian Defrang was 2 for 2 with a run scored and a walk.

Larsson Chapman was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins were doomed by two big innings by the Vikings on Thursday.

Port Townsend scored first on a sacrifice-fly RBI by Cody Russell, and held the lead until the third inning when North Kitsap plated six runs.

The Vikings then extended their lead to 10-1 with a four-run fourth inning.

Redskins pitchers Russell and Devon Courtney didn’t receive much offensive support, as the Redskins struck out 13 times.

Jacob King scored Port Townsend’s second run on passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Redskins (0-9, 0-10) play four games next week, starting with a home game against Klahowya (5-5, 6-7) on Monday. The Eagles have lost five straight Olympic League games after a 5-0 start.

Port Townsend then faces Kingston (1-6, 1-8) at home Tuesday and on the road Wednesday. The week concludes Friday with a road game at Bremerton (8-1, 9-4).

SEQUIM — Omar Flores scored a goal and had two assists to lead the Wolves to the Olympic League victory over their rivals.

Sequim went ahead 2-0 early in the second half and hung on for the win.

“This game was a little closer than the first time we played them,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.

“Port Angeles played harder, tackled harder and made us work a lot harder this time.

“It is always a tough match with PA. They always are ready to play.”

Both teams put heavy pressure on the opponent’s defense with a total of 19 shots on goal.

“We had our best passing game of the season so far,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.

Flores put Sequim on the board first in the 11th minute on an Eli Berg assist while Mason Barrett made it 2-0 in the 44th minute on a Flores assist.

Miki Andrus got the Riders back into the game with a goal in the 57th minute on a Wei-Yan Fu assist.

But two minutes later Ron Welches, on another Flores assist, put in an insurance goal for the Wolves.

Brasher named Flores his player of the match for his outstanding play.

“Sequim’s Omar Flores made several impact plays in the match,” Saari said.

Sequim outshot Port Angeles 12-7 for the day.

Freshman goalkeeper Austin Wagner had four saves for the Wolves while Jack Doryland, one of the top keepers in the league, had six for the Riders.

In addition to Flores and Wagner, Brasher also picked Berg, defender Hector Baylon and freshman midfielder Cameron Chase for having standout performances.

Chase, who sat out the first half because of an injury he suffered against North Kitsap, came in the second half and played well, Brasher said.

“Eli Berg played well in the middle and hector Baylon played well on the left [of the backfield],” he added.

Saari said he felt good about how his players performed.

“I was very pleased of the way we passed and played as a team,” he said.

“It was by far the best passing game the team has had this year, and it bodes well for the future if we can build on it.

“We are disappointed with the loss but encouraged by the overall performance and the passion that we played with.”

Saari picked Andrus as the offensive player of the match, Tristan Isett for defense and Abinet Hayden, Fu and Scott Methner as co-transition players.

Sequim won the JV game 5-1.

The Riders, 1-9-0 in league, next hosts North Mason on Tuesday while the Wolves play at Klahowya in Silverdale on Tuesday.

Port Townsend 3, Klahowya 1

PORT TOWNSEND — Brady Arthur scored two goals to lead the Redskins to the Olympic League victory Friday at Memorial Field.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead early in the 12th minute but it was all Port Townsend after that.

Arthur answered in the 25th minute to make it a 1-1 tie at halftime, and then Daniel Charlton’s shot on a Mitiku Little assist in the 42nd minute gave the Redskins the lead for good.

An insurance goal by Arthur on a Nick Silberman assist came in the 72nd minute.

The Redskins outshot the Eagles 18-6.

A season-high 32 Port Townsend defensive saves were credited to a solid Redskin back four, anchored by senior co-captain Xavie Frank, fellow senior Jordan Ristick, junior Forrest Piatt and freshman Patrick Charlton.

All contributed to aid a second-half clean-sheet for senior goalkeeper Daniel ChimaDawson.

Port Townsend also beat Klahowya 3-1 in the JV match.

Port Townsend next travels to Bremerton on Tuesday.

PORT LUDLOW — The Cowboys remained perfect on the year with the one-stroke Nisqually League victory on the par-36 Port Ludlow Tide nine in light rain and wind Friday.

Chimacum now is 5-0 in league matches.

“Scores were high because of the freezing wind,” Chimacum coach Mitch Black said.

“It was about as difficult as the Tide nine can play.”

Chimacum’s depth was tested in the match.

“It was a day just to survive,” Black said. “I’m glad we hung in there.”

Life Christian’s Nick Friend earned medalist honors with a 4-over 40.

The Cowboys had a three-tie for second at 42 with Riley Downs, Kevin Miller and Nathan Browning.

The Wolves improved to 4-1 in league as Ty Jones and Anthony Pinza claimed fourth and fifth with scores of 84 and 85 respectively.

“Although Dungeness was in superb condition, the wind was tough for some players to navigate,” Sequim coach Bill Shea said.

“We continue to show great depth in our team with the top four players all within four shots of each other,” Shea said.

The Wolves next play Port Townsend at Port Townsend Golf Club on Monday.
