PORT ANGELES — It was truly a heart-breaking loss for the Port Angeles girls soccer team Tuesday night at Civic Field.
The Roughriders staged a dramatic late-game comeback only to fall 3-2 in sudden-death overtime to the Kingston Buccaneers in Olympic League play.
The first half was scoreless as the game was a midfield battle.
Kingston started the second half strong, scoring in the second and 11th minutes to take a 2-0 lead.
“With 20 minutes left, we changed our lineup around by taking a defender out and moving a third player to forward,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
“The game changed once we did that.”
Shayla Northern assisted freshman Maddie Boe with 6 minutes left in the game to make it a 2-1 contest.
The two players teamed up one more time to make the game interesting.
Northern threaded a pass to Boe, who calmly finished for her second goal of the game and a 2-2 tie with just 3 minutes left.
“That was one of the most dramatic comebacks I’ve seen,” Moseley said.
“It is rare to score twice with such little time left.”
The goals were Boe’s fifth and sixth of the season.
However, the joy turned to sadness with one minute left in overtime.
A series of team breakdowns led to a foul on a Kingston player in the penalty box.
Sarah Holt converted the penalty kick and Kingston won the game on the “Golden Goal.”
Port Angeles goalkeeper Hayley Baxley had eight saves for the Roughriders.

PORT TOWNSEND — In a fine display of counterattacking soccer, the Redskins stunned the Bulldogs with three well executed first-half goals.
The first was a classic combination between Irina Lyons and Jewel Johnson.
Johnson scored on Lyons’ assist at the 17th minute.
“Jewel is so fast she easily outpaced the North Mason defense and ran onto Irina’s excellent through ball,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said.
“In those situations your money is always on Jewel, and she scored another lovely goal.”
The second came when Johnson slipped a well-timed pass to Jody Kimmel, who turned the ball into the near post corner at the 22nd minute.
Lyons finished the Port Townsend scoring with a typical long shot that caught the North Mason goalkeeper completely by surprise at the 33rd minute.
The pressure from the Bulldogs continued in the second half and they scored a goal midway through the half.
“We were not at our best tonight but it’s a sign of quality when a team doesn’t play at it’s best and still wins,” Foden said.
“We had notable performances from Anne Meek, Jewel Johnson, Alex Akins, Brenna Latchford and, as always, Malia Henderson.”
The Redskins are now 2-2-0 in league and 4-6-0 overall while North Mason falls to 0-4-0, 1-9-0.
The Redskins next play at North Kitsap (3-1-0, 7-2-1) in Poulsbo tonight.
