SPORTS: Neah Bay’s Doherty paces Red Devils to easy win; other prep results

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Drexler Doherty must love playing in the north Seattle suburbs.

The Neah Bay junior basketball star went on a scoring tear in the first half against North Sound Christian, sinking 22 points before intermission, to lead the Red Devils to a 91-61 trouncing over the Lions on Saturday.

As though that weren’t enough, he came back in the second half and added 26 more, ending the night with 48 points on 16-of-20 shooting for 2-point range and 5-of-13 on 3-pointers.

The Red Devils (4-1 in league, 15-4 overall) took a four-point lead at the half and ran away with the game in style.

Titus Pascua had 12 points for Neah Bay, while Robert Moss added 11.

The win followed up another dominant effort against rival Clallam Bay the night before, when Neah Bay reached the 90-point mark again.

Moss led the scoring blitz for the Red Devils with 27 point while grabbing 14 rebounds. Doherty had 11 points.

Clallam Bay was led by Emmitt James with 25 points. Kyle Hess had 17 while Jacob Portnoy added 12.

The Bruins lost again the next day to Highland Christian, 63-60, despite 26 points from Portnoy.

WINLOCK — The Spartans didn’t let a slow start get in the way of keeping their focus on the win Friday night.

Down 16-9 at halftime, Forks outscored the Cardinals 23-14 in the final two quarters for the win.

Frank Noles led the Spartans with nine points, nine rebounds, six steals, and four blocked shots. Tyler Penn added eight points.

Forks (4-5, 8-7) travels to Montesano on Tuesday.

PORT TOWNSEND — Steady shooting and strong defense led to a Redskins victory over their Class 3A Olympic League rivals Friday night.

“This was simply a great win for us,” Redskins coach John Stroeder said.

Jacob DeBerry led all scorers with 14 points.

Eric Thomas added 13 while Evan O’Brien sank 12 for Port Townsend (4-8, 6-10).

Port Townsend hosts North Mason on Tuesday.

Down by nine in the early part of the fourth, the Wolves came battling back.

Michael Dunning had two huge 3-pointers in the last frame to get Sequim back into the game. He ended up with nine points.

John Textor led the scoring for Sequim, sinking 16. Clancy Catelli added 10.

Sequim takes on rival Port Angeles on Tuesday.

CHIMACUM — Hot first quarter shooting set the tone Friday as the Cowboys cruised to a convincing 1A Nisqually League win over the Eagles.

Chimacum took a 13-point lead into the locker room at intermission and just kept adding to it after the break.

Samantha Benner led all scorers with 12 points, while Brittany Nelson added 10 for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys (3-6 8-9) travel to play Cascade Christian on Tuesday.

Kerri Evalt led all scorers with 14 points for Port Townsend. Brooke Little added 13 points, while Bella Fox hauled in nine rebounds.

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — The Red Devils continue to cruise over any challengers, racking up a pair of wins this weekend.

Neah Bay went out to an early lead Saturday night against the North Sound Christian Lions en route to another nonleague win.

Ardis Pullen led the Red Devils (5-0, 17-0) with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Rebecca Thompson added 16 points and nine boards.

Friday night, Neah Bay jumped out to an early 15-5 lead over Clallam Bay, cruising the rest of the way for a 52-31 win.

Pullen led the Red Devils with 11 points in the contest, while Cherish Moss sank eight and hauled down eight rebounds.

Jessica Angulo led the Bruins scoring with 16 points.

Clallam Bay (2-3, 10-4) rebounded the next day with a 35-32 win over Highland Christian.

Sarah Reeves had 16 points and six rebounds in the win, while Angulo had 10 points and five assists.
