PORT TOWNSEND — Class 1A Port Townsend played 2A North Kitsap tough in nonleague girls soccer action Tuesday night.
The Vikings (1-1-1) held on for a 2-0 victory.
In the most competitive game of the day between Olympic League teams, the Vikings scored first in the middle of the first half and again in the first minute of the second half.
“Playing against North Kitsap will always be difficult but tonight we made North Kitsap work really hard for the win,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said.
“North Kitsap had the greatest amount of possession on the ball but our back-line of Brenna Latchford, Alex Akins, Anne Meek and Becca Stewart were tenacious and outstanding.
“When you add in a superb goalkeeping display by Malia Henderson, it was clear that any goals would only come through a rare lapse in concentration.”
Madion Skansi scored first for the Vikings in the 25th minute and then Abbie Wright put in a goal in the 41st minute.
The Redskins had a few chances of their own.
“Nakaia Millman was solid in front of the back four and we managed to create some chances of our own.” Foden said.
“This was a huge improvement in commitment and energy over Monday’s game (a 3-1 loss to Crosspoint Academy) and clear evidence that at home in particular we will be a challenge for any team in the league.”
The Redskins next play at Sequim today with a mixed JV game at 5 p.m. and varsity following at 6:45 p.m.
