JOYCE — Dylen Heaward scored five touchdowns as Crescent stomped the Mary M. Knight Owl 54-7 in Saturday’s opening game.

“It’s a real good start and I’m glad to have a win under our belt, Crescent coach Tim Rooney said. “There are some things we definitely have to work on, but we played pretty well.”

The game ended with about five minutes to play in the fourth quarter due to the WIAA’s 45-point mercy rule.

“Heaward was all over the place,” Rooney said of the senior running back.

The senior finished with 225 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 12 carries.

He also caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Joey Barnes and returned an interception 15 yards for his fifth score of the day.

The Loggers racked up 394 yards rushing on 39 carries against Mary M. Knight.

Dylen Christie carried the ball nine times for 125 yards and two scores.

Joel Williams was active on defense with eight tackles, three for losses, and a fumble recovery.

Spanish exchange student Gonzald Albenbea showed a strong leg for the Loggers, connecting on four of five point-after attempts and booting two kickoffs through the end zone for touchbacks.

Crescent visits Class 2B Quilcene next Saturday.

“I’m not too sure if it’s going to be a straight-up eight-man game or if we are going to go eight-man on offense and 11-man on defense,” Rooney said of the game against Quilcene.

North Mason 26, Port Angeles 12

BELFAIR — The Dick Abrams era started off on a sour note Friday night.

A youthful Port Angeles team showed glimpses of a promising future at times, but the final result resembled much of the recent past in a season-opening loss to the Bulldogs.

“In the first half we were just trying to get our feet wet and to get a feel for it,” Abrams said following the loss in his first game as head coach of the Riders.

“It’s too bad they don’t have the jamborees like they used to. It would have helped us out quite a bit.”

North Mason led 13-0 at halftime, and the Bulldogs’ Tevin Williams opened the second half with an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to put North Mason up 19-0.

“That certainly hurt us as far as momentum and trying to get back into the game,” Abrams said.

North Mason tacked on one more touchdown in the fourth quarter before Port Angeles put some points on the board.

Cameron Moon scored two late rushing touchdowns for the Riders from three and seven yards out to account for the final score.

“He ran really well for us offensively and was solid on defense as well,” Abrams said.

Nathan Cristion led Port Angeles with 16 carries for 96 yards.

“He had a very good game for us at fullback and ran very hard,” Abrams said.

Port Angeles visits rival Sequim (1-0) next Friday.

Chimacum 12, Kingston 6

PORT TOWNSEND — The Cowboys avenged last season’s season-opening loss to the Buccaneers while earning a win for Shawn Meacham in his first game as Chimacum coach on Friday.

“Both teams had some miscues, some fumbles and penalties that hurt both teams’ opportunities to score, but our defense just held up all game and was able to hold them out,” Meacham said.

“The kids’ hard work on conditioning really showed.”

Dillon Dukek scored twice for Chimacum: in the first quarter on a 20-yard pass from Mason Moug and early in the fourth on a two-yard run that put the Cowboys ahead for good.

Meacham praised Derek Toepper and Daryn Settlemire’s contributions against the pass on defense.

Chimacum travels to face Forks (0-1) next Friday at 7 p.m.

Coupeville 22, Port Townsend 14

COUPEVILLE — Port Townsend stumbled out of the gate Friday night, losing to a Coupeville squad that went winless in 2008.

Coupeville’s Justin Adams accounted for all of the Wolves’ points, booting a 20-yard field goal to open the scoring and adding two rushing touchdowns and a 70-yard receiving score.

Port Townsend turned the ball over three times inside of the Coupeville 20-yard line.

“That really hurts,” coach Brian O’Hara said.

“We moved the ball, but we were kind of inconsistent at times. Turnovers and penalties really were a problem for us.”

The Redskins host Chelan, a team that showed up in many preseason previews as a state championship contender, at home next Friday.

“It doesn’t get easier,” O’Hara said. “But it’s really an opportunity for us to take a look at what we’re doing and what’s going to be successful for us.”

The game will be played at Blue Heron Middle School at 5 p.m. due to Memorial Field being used for Wooden Boat Festival parking.
