SPORTS: Olympic Peninsula Eagles football team gets new coach

PORT TOWNSEND — Dave Snyder has taken over as head coach for the Olympic Peninsula Eagles, a North Olympic Peninsula-based semipro football team.

Snyder replaces Mike McMahan, who stepped down earlier this week because of family issues.

The Eagles (2-3) have four games remaining in their Western Washington Football Alliance season.

Ownergeneral manager Don Purser said he expects the Eagles to shake off the slow start and contend for a playoff spot.

The Eagles combined with the Kitsap County Bears this season in order to contend for a playoff spot.

The Bears won the inaugural Pacific Coast League title last season, earned a No. 2 national ranking and played for a minor league national championship.

Snyder is the original coach of the Bears.

Stint goes 3 years

He coached the team the first three years before stepping down because of conflicts with his work schedule.

Snyder teaches and coaches at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo.

He is the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the football team, he is an assistant coach for the girls basketball team and he is the head track and field coach.

Snyder guided the North Kitsap girls to the Class 2A state track and field championship last month.

The Eagles host the Tacoma Invaders on Saturday at Jefferson County Memorial Stadium in Port Townsend at 6 p.m.

They host the Snohomish County Thunder the following Saturday at Memorial Field.

The July 7 game against the Thunder will be the Eagles’ final home contest of the year.
