SPORTS: Peninsula College’ Gloyd named NWAACC Player of the Week

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Peninsula College freshman wing Salim Gloyd earned NWAACC Player of the Week honors after his performance in leading the Pirates to the Clackamas Holiday Invitational championship last weekend.

Gloyd averaged 19.3 points and 12.7 rebounds in the three wins, including 24 points and 15 rebounds against Centralia in the championship game.

Gloyd was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

“Salim is deserving of this honor as his play was key to us bringing home the Clackamas tournament championship,” Peninsula College head coach Lance Von Vogt said.

“The sky is the limit for him and he is only beginning to scratch the surface of his ability on the basketball court.

“There are greater things to come for this young man.”

Salim contributed 17 points and 14 rebounds in the 78-56 win over Tacoma in the semifinal, which paired the winners of the last two NWAACC Championships against each other.

In the opening round win over Yakima Valley, Gloyd poured in 17 points while pulling down nine rebounds.

The 6-foot-6 Gloyd is receiving strong interest from Division I universities across the country. Cal Poly, Tennessee State, Idaho State and Columbia are currently recruiting him the hardest.

After a month of road games, Gloyd and the Pirates return home to play second-ranked Whatcom on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Peninsula college women also host Whatcom on Saturday, tipping off at 5 p.m.
