SPORTS: Peninsula College men’s basketball team rips Olympic; Rangers shade Pirates in women’s basketball

PORT ANGELES — DeShaun Freeman powered his way inside for 25 points to lead the first-place Peninsula College men’s basketball team to a romp over Olympic on Wednesday night.

The Pirates, first in the NWAACC North Division and ranked No. 3 in NWAACC, ripped the Rangers 86-57 to improve to 8-1 in conference and 13-5 overall.

Peninsula has won six games in a row and nine of the last 10.

“Olympic had no answer for DeShaun Freeman,” Peninsula coach Lance Von Vogt said.

“DeShaun is bigger and stronger and he had his way inside.”

Freeman made 10-of-12 shots from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.

The Pirates jumped out to a 14-2 lead and never trailed. They led 41-27 at halftime and never led by less than 14 points in the second half.

“We were never threatened,” Von Vogt said.

Thad Vinson sank 18 points for the Pirates while Jeremiah Johnson added 10.

Collin Johnson scored a team-high 18 points for Olympic while Josh Koets added 15.

The Pirates had a 40-26 advantage on the boards with Anthony Williams bringing down a game-high 10 and Jerry Johnson right behind with eight.

Mitrell Clark and Sam Waller had five assists each.

The Pirates also had good play from the bench.

Jeremiah Johnson came off the bench for three steals and three assists to go with his 10 points.

“Jeremiah played a tremendous game for us off the bench,” Von Vogt said.

As a team, the Pirates shot a scorching 56 percent from the field while holding the Rangers to 41 percent.

Peninsula has a tough game next at powerhouse Bellevue on Saturday night.

“That will be a tremendous test for us,” Von Vogt said.

Traditionally, Bellevue is always one of the best teams in the region, Von Vogt said.
