PORT ANGELES — Alaska’s Bartlett High School standout Treshawn King-Dunbar has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Peninsula College.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound point guard was an unanimous 4A (Alaska’s largest classification) first team all-state selection by the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches, and he led powerhouse Bartlett Golden Bears to the Alaska 4A state championship his junior season, compiling a 27-3 record.
“Tre is a hardworking vocal player that leads by both example and communication,” Peninsula men’s basketball head coach Lance Von Vogt said.
“He is a success junkie. The type of guy that is committed to do whatever is necessary for the team to be successful.
“After he visited the college, it was a no-brainer that we offer him a scholarship. I am ecstatic that he felt the same way about us.”
King-Dunbar averaged 14 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals per game during his senior season while also grabbing a unanimous all-conference selection for Cook Inlet 4A schools.
King-Dunbar helped lead the Golden Bears (20-10) to a state berth and a fifth-place finish at the state 4A tournament his senior year.
King-Dunbar is rated as the third best prospect and No. 1-rated point guard in the state, according to Alaska prep report.
Von Vogt says, “Tre changes speeds exceptionally well and is able to create opportunities for himself and teammates in both the open floor and in the half-court.
“He will continue the tradition of great guards we’ve had at Peninsula College.”
Bartlett is a well-known basketball powerhouse that has produced the likes of Mario Chalmers, current point guard for the Miami Heat.
Many remember Chalmers as the Kansas Jayhawk who won the national title with a 3-point shot in the 2008 national title game versus the Derrick Rose-led Memphis Tigers.
It is not a far cry to imagine King-Dunbar hitting a championship winning shot in the coming seasons for the Pirates, Von Vogt said.
King-Dunbar’s play at Bartlett earned him nine scholarship offers this spring, but he ultimately decided becoming a Pirate at Peninsula College was the right decision saying, “I’m excited to come to Peninsula and get to meet my teammates and get things started with Coach V.
“I feel like Peninsula is the best place for me to go and grow and develop as a player, person and most of all a student.
“I’m glad Coach V has given me this opportunity to come play for him and his program.”
King-Dunbar is the first signee for coach Lance Von Vogt and the Pirates as it looks to replace a roster that took home fourth place in the NWAACC championships this past year.
“Tre is a guy that consistently rises to a challenge, so I expect him to compete for playing time immediately,” said Von Vogt.
