SPORTS: Peninsula College softball team sweeps Edmonds at home

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College softball team got back on track in its home doubleheader against Edmonds on Tuesday.

The Pirates, fresh off a pair of road sweeps at the hands of Everett and Olympic last weekend, pulled off their first sweep of the season after beating the Tritons 9-0 and 12-4 in a pair of eight-run mercy rule contests.

Peninsula’s bats combined for 21 hits in the NWAACC North Division doubleheader.

Sophomore catcher Marquita Espinoza accounted for six of those hits by herself. The Sequim product was 6-for-6 on the day, bashing a double and home run.

Another Sequim grad, Carly Swingle, earned the victory on the mound in game one after facing just 18 batters in five innings pitched.

The sophomore gave up just three hits and zero walks in the complete game shutout.

Shayna Bucher got the win in game two, giving up six hits, one walk and zero earned runs.

Peninsula rallied from a 4-2 third inning deficit in the second game, scoring 10 runs between the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.

Espinoza’s two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth put the Pirates ahead to stay at 6-4.

Madigan Winters (RBI double), Cimone Trout (RBI single) and Dena Houser (two-run single) opened the fifth with run-scoring hits before Espinoza ended things with an RBI double.

The Pirates (3-5 in North, 4-9 overall) are off until a home doubleheader against Bellevue on April 23.
