Sports: Peninsula College team goes 2-4 at Disney tournament

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Peninsula College women’s softball team opened the 2006 season with two wins and four losses in a national tournament at Disney Wide World of Sports Spring Training last weekend.

The Pirates ended the tourney with two losses Sunday after splitting two games on Friday and on the first day, Thursday.

Peninsula concluded the season Sunday by losing 9-6 to College of DuPage of Chicago and losing 3-1 to Hudson Valley of Albany, N.Y.

DuPage captured third place in the nation last year.

Against DuPage, the Pirates led 5-4 in the fifth inning but couldn’t hold on. Jennifer Monroe went 2-for-4 at the plate while Nani Kam ripped a triple.

Megan Ramsey went the distance on the mound, striking out six.

The Pirates were held to three hits with Jenifer Melton, Monroe and Reina Boersma getting them. Sarah Bussell scored Peninsula’s only run in the sixth inning.

Ramsey pitched most of the doubleheader game because of an injury to another pitcher, giving up just four hits while fanning six batters.

On Friday, the Pirates ripped College of Lake County in Chicago 16-4 in a mercy-rule five innings behind 18 hits.
