SPORTS: Port Angeles boys swimming team dunks Bremerton; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — Avery Koehler, Jay Liang and John Macias sparked Port Angeles to a dominating Olympic League boys swimming and diving victory over Bremerton.

The three were all double winners for the Roughriders in the 122-58 win at William Shore Memorial Pool on Thursday.

The Riders improve to 3-0 in Olympic League competition.

Koehler qualified for the West Central District championships with both of his winning times, in the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 3.94 seconds, and in the 500 free in 5:51.17.

Liang, meanwhile, qualified for the district meet with his time of 1:07.30 in the 100 butterfly, and he also captured the victory in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.38.

Macias also qualified for districts in the 50 free with a time of 24.79 seconds, and in addition he won the 100 free in 56.82 seconds.

The Riders qualified five individual swims for the district championships, and Wei-Yan Fu joined the three double winners with a qualifying swim as he claimed second place in the 200 individual medley behind Liang in a time of 2:32.51.

Port Angeles placed first in all 12 events and outscored the Knights in 11 of the 12 events.

Also winning individual events for the Riders were Erik Eyestone in the 100 backstroke in 1:37.45, Fu in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.92 and A.J. Hatfield in one-meter diving with a score of 167.50.

Winning relay teams for Port Angeles included the 200 medley relay with Macias, Liang, Koehler and Fu in 1:55.48, the 200 free relay with Koehler, Fu, Ryan Becker and Cole Urnes in 1:52.02 and the 400 free relay with Liang, Nathan Bock, Urnes and Macias in 4:10.39.

SEQUIM — The powerhouse Vikings had their way against the Wolves in the Olympic League meet Thursday.

“They have a powerful team and often placed 1-2-3 in the event,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said.

However, the Wolves swept diving, went 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle, took first in the 200 free relay and second in the 200 medley relay, 50 and 100 free races and the 100 breaststroke.

“Overall, we had many new best times and a few district qualifying times,” Moats said.

Eric Prosser dropped 3 seconds in the 100 breast and qualified for districts while claiming second place, and David Vollenweider dropped 2 seconds off his best time in the same event.

Markus Petersen was first in the 500 free in 6:33.65 while teammate Steve Dewey came in second, just 1 second behind Petersen.

“There was a fun competition between Markus Petersen and Steve Dewey in this race,” Moats said.

“Steve is about 6-foot-2 and Markus is about 5-6,” Moats said.

“Markus swam a 6:39 in the meet on Tuesday and rubbed it in to Steve that he beat Steve’s 6:55 time from last year.

“So the two of them raced [Thursday] and finished within 1 second of each other. They both want a rematch as soon as possible.”

Jon Donahue, a rookie, finished with a respectable time and third place in the 200 free with a time of 2:31.85, Vollenweider dropped 12 seconds off his best time in the event for fourth and Aaron Witherell, also a rookie swimmer, came in fifth with a good time of 2:49.72.

Cameron Harrison had a best season score of 188.65 to take first place in diving for Sequim while Prosser continued to improve with a gain of eight points in this meet.

Yago DePazos continues to improve for the Wolves and dropped 10 seconds off his best time in the 100 free.

The Sequim 200 free relay swam a season’s best by 9 seconds and easily qualified for districts with Steve Dewey, Doug Dunbar, Prosser and Jerod Hollen with a time of 1:44.22.

In addition, Sequim’s Matt Cays dropped 3 seconds in the 100 backstroke, bringing him within reach of a district qualifying time.
