SPORTS: Port Angeles boys swimming team wins league dual-meet title by swamping North Kitsap; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys swimming team swamped North Kitsap to capture the Olympic League dual-meet championship Thursday at William Shore Memorial Pool.

Charlie Parks, C.J. Urnes and Tyler Burke all were double winners to lead the Roughriders to the dominating 114-69 victory.

Port Angeles was perfect in league at 6-0.

The Riders piled up 14 season-best times and won 10 of the 12 events.

Parks won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke while Urnes captured the 500 and 200 freestyle races and Burke claimed the 100 free and 100 backstroke.

Joel Elder earned his first individual district qualifying time as he took fifth in the 200 free in a time of 2:17.58.

Other winners for Port Angeles were Sam Beasley in diving, the 200 medley relay with Burke, Parks, Avery Koehler and Kris Wannquist, the 200 free relay with Parks, Matt Watkins, Connor Reid and Wannquist and the 400 free relay of Koehler, Urnes, Tarren Grimsley and Burke.

Five seniors were recognized in their final home meet including co-captains Parks and Urnes, Simon Biland, Joshua Scott and Cody Owens.

The next meet is the divisional invitational hosted by Port Angeles on Feb. 1.

This is the last chance for athletes to qualify for the district championships.

The Riders currently have 10 athletes qualified for districts.

Sequim 115, Bremerton 67

BREMERTON — Thomas Moores was a double winner to lead the Wolves to the Olympic League win Thursday.

Moores won the 100-yard backstroke and the 50 freestyle as Sequim won seven events.

Noe Calderon qualified for the district meet and earned first place with a time of 1:12.03 in the 100 butterfly.

Also earned district berths were the 200 freestyle and 400 free relay teams.

The 400 free relay took first with a time of 4:15.89. Swimmers were Doug Dunbar, Moores, Kris Peterson and Drew Rickerson.

The 200 free relay was second in 1:51.13 with Calderon, Matthew Cays, Andrew Gunstone and Rickerson.

Also winning events for the Wolves were Rickerson in the 200 free, Ezra Perkins in diving and Peterson in the 500 free.

“The team really worked together at thismeet and it paid off,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said.

Wrestling North Mason 45, Sequim 31

BELFAIR — The powerhouse Bulldogs rushed out to a 33-0 lead when the meet started in the lower weights and cruised to the Olympic League makeup win Thursday night.

The match was made up after it was snowed out earlier in the season.

“North Mason is extremely strong in the lower weights,” Sequim coach Len Borchers said.

“We gave them a pretty good go.”

The Wolves outscored North Mason 31-12 in the upper weights.

Winning for Sequim were Winston Babb with a pin at 140 pounds, Cody Field with a pin at 145, Kawika Yasumura with a 21-9 major decision at 160, Jack Wiker with a 7-2 win at 189 and emillo Perete-Colin with a pin at 215.

Sequim next hosts a double-dual league meet with Port Townsend and Bremerton next Wednesday.

Girls Basketball Quilcene 35, P.S. Adventist 32

KIRKLAND — The Rangers held off a late rally to drop the Class 2B Sharks in Sea-Tac League action Thursday night.

Leanne Weed dropped in 16 points to lead the Rangers (4-3 in league, 8-6 overall) to their second win this week.

Bowling Sequim at league

SEQUIM — The Wolves bowled three games at the Olympic League championships with four girls qualifying for the district meet Thursday.

Kim Duce was the top qualifier with scores of 158-108-204 — 470 while Sage Brown had scores of 108-139-143 — 390.

Also qualifying for district were Mikayla Ahlin with scores of 111-136-128 — 375 and Danyelle Wilson had scores of 129-110-98 — 337.

The district championships are slated for Tacoma next Saturday.

Duce finished in 10th place and made the all-tournament team while Duce and Brown were named to the second team all-league squad.
