PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles relied on its depth to edge Klahowya 4-3 in boys tennis action to remain undefeated on the season.
“Klahowya always seems to have athletic kids that can give us problems, but our guys hung in there and won some big points,” said Roughriders coach Brian Gundersen.
Port Angeles dropped the No. 1 singles match when Alex Brown fell to Jerry Landram, but took the other two.
Nick Fritschler beat Forrest Brockett 7-6, 6-1, and Ben Basden defeated Brayden Meyers 7-6, 6-4
Gundersen singled out Basden as the player of the match.
“Ben won a huge match for us that was tight all the way,” Gunderson said.
“He was actually down 4-1 in the second set and won the final five games.”
The Riders and Eagles split the four doubles matches on Tuesday.
For Port Angeles, Tanner Gochnour and Connor Heilman defeated Cameron Dammeyer and Florian Glatzer, and Elliott Soelter and Nick Emmett topped Tim Larson and Alex Roberts.
The Riders (3-0) travel to Chimacum today to face Chimacum/Port Townsend.

SILVERDALE — The Roughriders lost to the Eagles a hard-fought match that lasted approximately three hours.
“The girls played hard all night,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said.
“It was a great match, and both teams had fun playing such a competitive match.”
Tuesday’s first set was a see-saw the whole way. The Riders kept coming back from two or three points behind, only to fall behind again.
But they took control at the end of the set to win 29-27.
Port Angeles lost the second set 25-21 after battling back from being down 21-11.
The Riders got back in the game behind the serving of Holli Williams and Kendra Harvey.
Set three was all Port Angeles, as it won 25-19, the largest margin of victory of the match’s fives sets.
The two teams stayed lose in the fourth set, but Klahowya pulled out a 25-21 win.
In the fifth and deciding set, the Riders took an early lead, but struggled passing at the end and committed too many unforced errors, and the Eagles took the match with a 15-12 win.
For Port Angeles, Maddy Hinrichs had seven kills, 24 digs, two blocks and was 17-18 serving and had one ace.
Kendra Harvey had 35 digs, one kill, and three aces while serving 16-17.
Holli Williams was a perfect 20-20 serving with four aces and contributed 28 assists, two kills and 14 digs.
Brittany Norberg had five kills and one block.
Bailee Jones had four kills, seven blocks, six digs and one ace while serving 11-12.
Alyssa Wetzler served 12-14 and had 14 digs and one kill.
The Riders (0-2) host North Mason today.

POULSBO — Still without Jewel Johnson, the Redskins’ attack sputtered along, but for the first time this season they had a full defense.
The defense played so well that it reduced the Vikings to long-range shots and a second half full of frustration.
“The defense covered for each other, scrambled the ball away, and did whatever else was necessary to keep the score down,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said following Tuesday’s game.
“Forcing long shots when you have a goalkeeper of the quality of Malia Henderson turns out to be a good strategy, as North Kitsap found it extremely difficult to beat her.
“She made some amazing saves.”
The Vikings scored three first-half goals, but only found the back of the net once after intermission.
“It was a success even though the team lost,” Foden said.
“Holding an extremely talented North Kitsap team to one goal in the second half was a terrific success.”
Port Townsend (0-4) hosts Sequim today at Memorial Field.

BREMERTON — The Eagles quickness gave the Roughriders trouble all night, particularly in the first half when Klahowya built a 5-0 lead.
“I challenged the girls at halftime to compete better in the second half. The first half we played scared and tentative, and Klahowya jumped on us,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
The second half was much more competitive with the Riders earning four shots on goal and limiting Klahowya (3-1) to only one goal.
For their consistent hard work in the midfield, Moseley named Kylee Jeffers and Maddie Boe as transition players of the match.
Port Angeles (0-3) hosts North Mason tonight at Civic Field.

CHIMACUM — The young Cowboys had a nice defensive game against the Warriors.
“Defense covered strongly,” Chimacum coach Debbie Berreth said.
“Ashley Kelly and Samantha Cerna as center defenders had some great long clearing balls to midfielders.
“Outside defenders, Kristen Castillo and April Avila did a great job in containing Seattle Christian’s midfielders.”
Midfielder Mukda Chabairum played great through balls for forwards Holly Taylor and Samantha Raines
Berreth also liked the play of new midfielder Sydney Louchard, who showed strong support as well as great passing support to the forwards.
“Goalkeeper Kyah McKinley did an amazing job of spoiling several shots on goal,” Berreth said.

SEQUIM — The Wolves fell to 0-3 on the season with a home loss to the Trojans.
Sequim’s only goal was scored by Leslie Cisneros in the 19th minute off an assist by Maeve Harris.
