PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles won its third straight game Friday night, beating North Mason 68-62 behind a balanced scoring attack.
The Roughriders had three players in double figures and three others close.
Hayden Gunderson led the team with 15 points, Derek Schumacher had 14 and Caleb Treider scored 13.
Hunter Hathaway finished with eight points, and Tristan Isett and Garrett Payton both scored seven.
The three-game streak comes after the young Riders began the season 0-10.
“We are playing with a high amount of intensity and we’ve played through every play,” Port Angeles first-year coach Brent Stephens said of his teams recent turnaround.
“We’ve played through the negative instead of letting errors compound to where one bad thing becomes three bad things.
“We’re carrying a little momentum. We’re just trying to knock them down one at a time.
“We know we’ve got some ground to make up if we want to make that district tournament, and we know we’ve got to beat some pretty good teams.”
Along with leading Port Angeles in scoring, Gunderson had a solid all-around game with six assists and four steals.
Rebounding kings
Schumacher and Hathaway grabbed nine rebounds a piece, with seven of Schumacher’s boards coming off the offensive glass.
The two post players have performed well during the absence of starter Marshall Elliott, who has missed four games after suffering concussion since late last month.
Schumacher has scored in double figures in all four games since Elliott went down.
Hathaway, a sophomore, has averaged 7.8 points and 8.4 rebounds in five games after being called up from the JV team before Christmas.
Riley McKean scored 27 points in the loss for North Mason.
Next up for Port Angeles (2-7, 3-10) is a road tilt with the Kingston Buccaneers (5-3, 7-5) on Wednesday.

BELFAIR — The Roughriders remained perfect in the Olympic League by using a balanced offensive attack against the Bulldogs on Friday night.
Maddy Hinrichs and Macy Walker combined for 23 points as the Riders improved to 9-0 in league and 9-3 overall.
“During the game, we worked on a variety of defensive looks,” coach Michael Poindexter said.
“Our man-to-man press helped generate a better offensive attack in the second quarter.
“All eight players contributed to a much better pressing effort than we had against Port Townsend on Tuesday night.
“Our energy was good and we were appropriately aggressive with our decision-making on the press.”
Jennifer Hicks, who netted a team-high 12 points for the Bulldogs, hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter against the Port Angeles zone.
Hinrichs led the Riders with 13 points while Walker added 10.
“Our shot selection offensively was good for most of the night; we didn’t shoot that well from the outside [5 of 22 on 3-point shots], but we moved the ball fairly well and North Mason’s zone occasionally took away our inside game, forcing us to take more shots from the outside than we normally might,” Poindexter said.
The Riders next host Kingston (4-4, 6-6) on Wednesday.

FORKS — Jillian Raben’s hot touch from long distance and Courtnie Paul’s clutch free-throw shooting weren’t quite enough for the Spartans to pull off a big SWL-Evergreen Division upset on Thursday night.
But they almost were.
Hoquiam shaded Forks 57-55 in overtime.
“We played extremely well for the first three quarters in taking the second-place Hoquiam girls to the wire,” Forks coach Al Scheibner said.
Paul kept the Spartans in the game at the end as she went 2 for 2 twice from the free-throw line to make all four shots during the last 2 minutes of regulation to tie it each time to get Forks into overtime.
Raben, meanwhile, made six 3s throughout the game on her way to her best game of the season, Scheibner said.
Two of Raben’s long-distance shots came in overtime to keep the Spartans close.
Sassy Price also had a good game offensively, scoring eight of her 12 points in the first quarter.
“It was a tough loss at home for us [because] we had our opportunities to put them away,” Scheibner said.
“Hoquiam is an experienced team, though, and played well enough to pull out the victory.
“It was a great game to be part of, and I’m really proud of how the girls battled for all 36 minutes.
“We are starting the second half of league, so hopefully we can use this as a building block in trying to get to districts.”

FORKS — The Spartans couldn’t quite overcome a slow start against the Eagles on Friday night.
“We started out pretty rocky for the first 6 minutes of the first quarter,” Forks coach Al Scheibner said.
“Probably due to the overtime game the night before. However, for the rest of the first quarter and the second quarter, we played pretty well.”
The Spartans held Elma to just 10 second-quarter and 12 third-quarter points, but the defense ran out of energy in the final period.
“Playing three games in four nights took its tole the 4th quarter defensively, where we allowed 20 points,” Scheibner said.
“Elma is a tough team led by Megan Finger, and they did a really good job on spreading out their scoring.”
Finger finished with a game-high 21 points.
Jillian Raben led Forks in scoring with 10 points and Erin Weekes added eight.
Casey Williams was limited because of illness and Sassy Price got into early foul trouble.
“Courtney Paul and Alex Henderson picked up the slack defensively and did a great job in our 2-3 zone,” Scheibner said.
“I was extremely proud how we came back and battled after our rocky start, particularly after our overtime loss less than 24 hours earlier.”
Forks (1-4, 1-10) hosts Rochester (4-3, 8-6) on Tuesday night.

CLALLAM BAY — The Red Devils charged out to a 25-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back in the North Olympic League game Friday night.
“Neah Bay came out with a good, hard press and flustered our girls from the beginning,” Clallam Bay coach Kathleen Winter said.
“They are a very dominating team.”
Cierra Moss scorched the nets for 18 points to help lead the Red Devils to 2-0 league and 8-0 overall records.
The rest of the scoring was spread out with Kaela Tyler and Blaire Hill sinking eight points each.
Zeria Signor, Kyla Wilson and Kenna Welever each had four points apiece for the Bruins.
