SILVERDALE — Avery Koehler became the first Port Angeles swimmer to qualify for state, but the Roughriders lost to Klahowya 94-86 Thursday.
Koehler qualified by swimming a 2:11.89 in the 200-meter individual medley.
He also qualified for districts in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Koehler finished first in the 200 IM and second in the 100 breast.
Port Angeles had two other swimmers qualify for the district meet: John Macias in the 200-meter freestyle and Wei-Yan Fu in the 50-meter freestyle. Both finished second at the meet in those events.
Other first-place finishers against Klahowya were diver A.J. Hatfield, Jay Liang in the 100-meter butterfly, Cole Urnes in the 500 free and the 200 free relay team of Ryan Becker, Fu, Urnes and Koehler.
Though the Riders finished first in six of the 12 events, they only outscored the Eagles in five events.
Port Angeles’ (2-2, 2-2) next meet isn’t until Thursday, Jan. 17, when it hosts Sequim.

SEQUIM — The Wolves lost, but still managed to have many athletes finish with the best times and other with good placing.
Markus Petersen beat his previous personal best in the 200-meter freestyle by 14 seconds.
After setting a new personal mark last week, David Vollenweider again beat his personal record in the 200-meter individual medley by five seconds.
In the 100 fly, Vollenweider dopped six seconds off his best.
Kiano Stoppani also finished to 200 IM with a personal best, surpassing his previous time by 26 seconds.
Matt Cays set a personal record in the 100 fly, surpassing the previous mark by 17 seconds.
Eric Prosser qualified for the district meet in the 50-meter freestyle.
Prosser also qualified for districts in the 100 back with a time of 1:05, which was six seconds off his besg time.
Jon Donahue dove for the first time as a varsity team member and placed third.
Steve Dewey swam a best time by three seconds in the 100 freestyle, and is only a half-second away from qualifying for districts. Donahue also swam well in this race, despite losing his goggles near the beginning.
Jerod Hollen swam the 100 breast for the first time and came close to qualifying for districts.
Yago DePazos dropped several seconds off his previous best 100 breast time.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders improved to 2-0 on the season and in the Olympic League with their victory over the Bulldogs on Thursday night.
The win came on Bud Dire Memorial Alumni Night, in which the Riders celebrate the founding of the Port Angeles wrestling program 50 years ago.
Winners for Port Angeles were Ozzy Swagerty, Ricky Crawford, Brian Cristion, Matt Robbins, Eric Wahl and Roberto Coronel.
Swagerty, Cristion, Robbins and Coronel all won by pin.
