SPORTS: Port Angeles girls basketball team rides into second place; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — Four players scored in double figures as the Port Angeles girls basketball team ripped North Kitsap in a battle for the Olympic League’s second seed Tuesday night.

The Roughriders (12-3, 13-5) pounded the Vikings (8-5, 9-6) 72-47 in a game that was close only in the first quarter.

“It was a good first quarter (19-18 Port Angeles) as both teams shot the ball well but our press started to take a toll in the second and third quarters,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.

The Riders outscored the Vikings 37-17 in the second and third periods.

“Our offensive ball movement was the best of the season,” Poindexter said.

Team defense was strong, too, as the Riders held North Kitsap’s top scorer, Rebecca Baugh, to two 3 pointers in the first quarter.

“That was a tremendous effort to shut Rebecca down in the final three quarters of the game,” Poindexter said.

Paxton Rodocker sparked the Riders with 16 points while Kiah Jones and Kathryn Moseley sank 11 each and Maddy Hinrichs netted 10.

Port Angeles now has most of the week off before it travels to archrival Sequim next Tuesday in a doubleheader. The girls game will start at 5:15 p.m. with the boys to follow.

BELFAIR — The Port Townsend girls basketball team has the inside track to the Class 1A playoffs after taking care of North Mason on the road Tuesday night.

Irina Lyons scored a team-high 11 points to pace the Redskins to the Olympic League victory over the Bulldogs.

The Redskins (5-10, 9-10) hope to get at least one more win while keeping their eyes on Klahowya, who they need to finish higher in the standings.

The Eagles had four wins as of Wednesday afternoon.

“Klahowya finishes with a tough schedule, which gives us hope,” Port Townsend coach Randy Maag said.

The Redskins came out a little slow against the Bulldogs (0-13, 2-15) on Tuesday.

“We were a little sloppy in the first half,” Maag said.

“After a little discussion at halftime, we came out hard in the third quarter. For some reason, we never play well at North Mason.”

After leading just 21-17 at the break, the Redskins outscored the Bulldogs 16-8 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Kiley Maag scored nine points for Port Townsend while Jewell Johnson had seven.

The Redskins conclude the regular season when they host Bremerton on Friday night for Senior Night.

Seniors on their current roster include Chelsea Whipple, Kiley Maag, Kaile Phillips and Megan Gambill.

PORT ANGELES — Crescent senior Sara Moore was in a zone, rallying the Loggers with a season-high 29 points and 16 rebounds after Crescent fell behind 17-6 after one and 27-18 at the break.

Moore wasn’t the top rebounder in the game, though, as teammate Tori McGowen collected 18.

The Loggers swept the Roughriders this year, beating the C team twice and now coming from behind to shade the tough JV squad.

“It was good to play the JV team because that gave us good experience in our final two regular-season games,” Crescent coach Brian Scott said.

The Loggers host state powerhouse Neah Bay on Friday night and then have an all-important meeting with Clallam Bay on Tuesday that will determine the No. 2-seeded team in the playoffs.

Crescent is 1-2 (5-8 overall) in the North Olympic League and the Bruins are 1-3, 6-8.

Lenora Hofer led the Riders with 12 points while Jolene Millsap sank 10.

Sequim will play league-leading Kingston on Friday night and Bremerton on Saturday evening before taking on the Riders in their second meeting of the season.

“It was a great team effort with four players in double figures.”

McCartney and Walker also brought down 10 rebounds apiece.

“It was a very physical game and good team basketball by us,” Armstrong said.

It was Senior Night, so Port Townsend’s lone senior, Luke Coppenrath, was feted before the game.

“Luke played a lot of minutes for us in the game,” coach Tom Webster said.

The contest was tied at 30-all with 18 seconds left and the Redskins had the last shot.

Kelly was fouled, missed the front end but then North Mason was given a technical and Kelly dropped both free throws for the winning 32-30 edge with 1.8 seconds left.

Brian LeMaster added two free throws for the final margin with .8 of a second left.

“Kyle Kelly had a great game,” Webster said.

Port Townsend will conclude play at Bremerton on Friday night.
