PORT ANGELES — Rich Butler, who has coached the Port Angeles High School boys swimming and diving team since 1998, has been selected to also coach the girls swimming and diving team.
Rich replaces his wife, Amity Butler, who leaves the girls swimming coach position to accept the interim principal appointment at Franklin Elementary School.
Rich, who currently teaches math at Stevens Middle School, has taught for the Port Angeles School District since 2003.
He graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, first in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in communications, and again in 1998 with a master’s degree in elementary education.
Jeff Clark, Port Angeles High School associate principal and responsible for hiring coaches, described Rich as a talented coach with a strong track record with the boys team.
“Rich served as Amity’s assistant coach for the girls team last year, so the swimmers already know him,” Clark said.
“He’ll be able to hit the ground running from day one.”
The girls swimming season is in fall, which started this week, while the boys swimming season is in winter.
