PORT ANGELES — For just a minute, rather for 24 seconds Friday night it looked like Port Angeles High School might turn its Narrows League football opener against Shelton into a close game.
Adam Macomber returned a kickoff 91 yards for a much-needed touchdown with only 38 seconds left in the first half to pull the Roughriders (0-1 in league, 1-2 overall) within 23-12.
That after Shelton (1-0 in league, 2-1 overall) grabbed a 20-0 lead.
But Macomber’s return, during which he left all other players behind while he sped up the left sideline and lifted the Rider fans from their seats, would turn out not to be the last score of the half.
Isaiah Taito, Shelton’s own speedy running back, got loose and scored on a 69-yard run with 14 seconds left.
“Unbelievable,” Port Angeles coach Dan Novick exclaimed on the home sideline as Taito strode into the north end zone at Civic Field.
And with that, Shelton was well on its way to a 51-18 victory.
