SPORTS: Port Angeles, Sequim softball teams still perfect on year, will meet Wednesday in Port Angeles

SILVERDALE — The Port Angeles softball team remained perfect on the year to set up a showdown with undefeated archrival Sequim on Wednesday.

The Roughriders, 7-0 in the Olympic League and overall, will host the Wolves (6-0 in league, 9-0 overall) at Dry Creek Elementary School at 4 p.m.

Port Angeles coach Buddy Bear said the Riders need to get as many innings in as possible before the playoffs start.

“Both teams [Sequim and Port Angeles] will make the playoffs but we need to get some innings in,” Bear said.

“We’re playing well but we just need to get some games in.”

The Riders had to play between hail storms Monday in Silverdale against the Eagles.

Port Angeles led 5-3 after four innings and then scored three in the fifth and five in the seventh to put the game away.

Stacy Webb (5-0) stayed perfect on the year by fanning two, walking two and allowing just two earned runs and four hits.

The Riders ripped the ball for three home runs with Mariah Frazier and Hanna Wahto earning two round-trippers each.

Kelsey Hinsdale had the other.

Boys Soccer
Port Townsend 1, Olympic 0

SILVERDALE — The Redskins won their first Olympic League game and second overall match of the year Monday.

Mitiku Little scored the only goal Port Townsend needed in the ninth minute as the Redskins improved to 1-1 in league and 2-6-1 overall.

Port Townsend had 19 shots on goal to Olympic’s 14 as goalkeeper Brian LeMaster came up with eight saves for the Redskins.

“It was a good game for us, especially since it was our first game back after break,” Port Townsend coach Patrick Kane said.

The Redskins next host Kingston in a league game Thursday.

Hoquiam 2, Forks 0

HOQUIAM — The Spartans continue their scoring slump in the Southwest Washington League game Monday.

“We outshot them during the game but we had a hard time getting our shots to fall, so to speak,” Forks coach Brian Bowers said.

Forks didn’t have any problem scoring in the beginning of the season but has had problems finishing their shots recently.

“We need to work on making quality shots,” Bowers said.

Goalkeeper Sergio Chase had 10 saves in the game.

The Spartans are now 2-4 in the Evergreen Division and 2-5 overall.

They next host Montesano on Wednesday.

Baseball
Port Angeles 7, Klahowya 1, suspended

SILVERDALE — The Roughriders were two innings away from earning their fifth win of the year before Monday’s game was suspended because of rain.

“It was a mess,” Port Angeles coach Bob Withrow said about the weather.

The game was suspended at the end of the fifth inning.

The final two innings will be made up another time, Withrow said.

Port Angeles is still 4-2 in Olympic League and overall action.

Cody Sullivan struck out six while allowing just one earned run in four innings for the Riders while Easton Napiontek was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a stolen base.

Derek Crain went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Girls Tennis
Port Angeles 5, Olympic 2

SILVERDALE — The Roughriders swept doubles play to hold off the Trojans in the Olympic League match Monday.

“I was a little concerned about coming out flat since this was our first away match and first match after spring break,” coach Brian Gundersen said.

“I was really impressed with how the girls started the match [Monday].”

Lissy Moriarty and Bradi McFarlen were named the players of the match after winning 6-4, 7-6 at No. 4 doubles.

“When we played Olympic a couple of weeks ago, our fourth doubles team was beaten pretty soundly,” Gundersen said.

“Today, Lissy and Bradi played a great match.”

Also winning at doubles were Caylie Cook and Laney Boyd at No. 1, Chelsea Drake and Danielle Rutherford at No. 2, and Kyrie Reyes and Kelsey Coffman at No. 3.

Shayla Bohman also won at No. 2 singles for the Riders.
