SPORTS: Port Angeles, Sequim softball teams win, prepare for league title showdown; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — Stacy Webb (10-1) pitched a one-hit shutout and had an RBI-double to spark Port Angeles to a 10-0 Olympic League softball victory over Klahowya on Tuesday.

The five-inning mercy-rule win was just a tune-up for the league championship showdown at archrival Sequim on Thursday.

The Roughriders’ (14-1 in league and overall) only loss came against unbeaten Sequim earlier in the season, and a victory Thursday would give Port Angeles a tie for first place with Sequim.

A Wolves’ victory, though, would make Sequim first and Port Angeles second in league.

Sequim remained unbeaten by pounding Bremerton 21-1 in five innings Tuesday.

Webb struck out four and walked only one against Klahowya while going 1-for-1 at the plate with two runs scored.

Katie Loghry also scored two runs and had a double.

The Riders had just six hits in the game but worked the Klahowya pitchers for 13 walks.

Four seniors were honored on Senior Day with Webb, Loghry, Kelsey Hinsdale and Sheri Adams all playing their final high school home game.

BREMERTON — The Olympic League-leading Wolves (13-0, 16-0) pounded out 24 hits, including three home runs and two doubles Tuesday.

Columbia Haupt pitched a five-inning two-hitter with no earned runs as the Wolves now prepare to play rival Port Angeles for the league title at home Thursday.

A win gives Sequim the league championship outright and a loss makes it a two-way tie at the top of the standings.

At any rate the two area teams will go to the Class 2A subdistrict tournament in Enumclaw on May 13 as the No. 1 and 2 seeds from the Olympic League.

Hitting homers for the Wolves on Tuesday were Lea Hopson, Maddy Zbaraschuk and Demiree Briones while Hopson and Maddy Zbaraschuk also had doubles.

SEQUIM — Seniors starred on senior night as all six goals were scored by seniors with Nick Camporini leading the way with a hat trick Tuesday night.

The Wolves (4-3, 8-6) had only one goal at halftime but exploded for five more in the second half to run away from the Trojans and have a shot for third place in league after North Kitsap beat Port Angeles 2-0 on Tuesday.

Sequim must beat Kingston there in its final regular-season game Thursday to have a chance at third and a bye in subdistrict play.

Otherwise, the Wolves would finish in fourth place and be in a pigtail play-in game next Wednesday.

Camporini scored in the first minute of the game against Olympic on an assist by David Richards.

Camporini scored again in the 50th minute on Jerry Azanza’s assist while Richards scored at 62 minutes on Camporini’s assist.

Camporini’s third goal on a penalty kick at 64 minutes made it a 4-0 game.

Azanza scored the final two goals on Michael Lee assists at 74 and 75 minutes.

Goalie Byron Boots had two saves for the Wolves, who outshot the Trojans 17-3.

Port Townsend 3, Klahowya 1

SILVERDALE — The Redskins (3-5, 5-10-1) won a crucial Olympic League game at Klahowya’s Senior Night on Tuesday.

“The win keeps us in the playoff hunt,” coach Patrick Kane said.

The Redskins, who have a bye on the last regular-season night Thursday, will be watching the North Mason-Bremerton game to see if they make the playoffs or not.

If North Mason ties or loses, the Redskins are in, Kane said.

Bremerton is the top team in the league.

Port Townsend led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Nick Silverman and Omar Santos.

Max Gunn had an assist on the Silverman goal.

Klahowya scored in the 69th minute but Silverman put the game away in the 75th minute on Santos’ assist.

Goalkeeper Brian LeMaster had 15 saves for the Redskins.

“He had four really big saves for us,” Kane said.

Forks 4, Elma 2

ELMA — Their playoff fate already sealed, the Spartans played the role of spoilers in Tuesday’s SWL-Evergreen Division match.

Geovany Miguel scored the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute off a Gabriel Camarena assist, and Alexis Ayala added his second score of the game three minutes later as Forks eliminated Elma from postseason contention.

Goalkeeper Shaq Cress had 15 saves for the Spartans (5-9 in league, 5-10 overall), who also got great support from sweeper Juan Beltran.

Forks will close out its season Thursday when it hosts Tenino.

North Kitsap 2, Port Angeles 0

PORT ANGELES — Some missed opportunities and a couple of timely strikes from the Vikings cost the Roughriders a shot at improving their postseason seeding Tuesday.

North Kitsap milked a 1-0 lead after scoring in the 16th minute, and the Riders dropped to fourth place in the Olympic League with the loss.

“We missed a couple of good opportunities in the first half, put them both over the cross bar,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.

“That could have changed the outlook of the game, but we didn’t finish, and they capitalized on some poor clearances on our part.”

Sam Beasley was named the Riders’ defensive player of the match, and Kyle Bingham earned transition honors.

Port Angeles (3-2-2, 9-4-2) will close out its league schedule with a game at Olympic on Thursday,.

A win there, combined with a Sequim loss on the same night, would give the Riders an automatic berth into the district playoffs.

Otherwise, they will have to play in a loser-out sub-district playoff.
