SPORTS: Port Angeles volleyball team loses bid for perfect regular season; other prep reports

POULSBO — Port Angeles’ dream of a perfect regular volleyball season was ended by North Kitsap on Tuesday night.

The Vikings (8-0, 12-1) won the Olympic League title by beating the Roughriders (7-1, 13-1) 3-2 in a barn-burner worthy of the two best teams in league.

North Kitsap won by the scores of 25-19, 19-25, 25-16, 16-25, 15-10.

“We knew it would be a tough environment for us because it was their senior night in their gym,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said.

“North attacked much more than I have seen them attack. We played good defense and we passed well.

“It was a bummer we didn’t win. We had our opportunities.”

The perfect season is lost but the Riders still can shoot for good postseason tournament results starting Saturday with subdistrict action at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.

As the No. 2 Olympic League seed, the Riders will take on White River at noon in the first round for the top four district seeds.

The winner will play the winner between North Kitsap and Interlake for the top two district seeds and the losers of the two matches will meet for the third and fourth seeds.

The seeding matches both start at 4 p.m.

The Riders played outstanding ball against the Vikings on Tuesday as Bailee Jones might have set a school record in a single match with 11 blocks.

Her sister, Kiah Jones, dominated the net with 21 kills and five blocks to go with six digs.

Darian Foley added 10 kills while Danielle Rutherford added eight kills and Autumn Ruddick had six kills.

Rutherford was 19 of 20 serving with two aces while Foley was a perfect 22 of 22.

Setter Emily Drake dished up 32 assists and added five digs.

Lauren Norton had a team-high 19 digs.

NEAH BAY — The Red Devils beat their archrival for second place in the North Olympic League and a berth in the tri-district tournament Tuesday night.

Neah Bay (2-3, 4-5) won by the scores of 25-23, 25-18, 25-21.

The Bruins finished the year at 1-5, 4-8.

The Red Devils played a strong match, Neah Bay coach Sharon Kanichy said.

“They knew what they had to do and they went out and got it done.”

Neah Bay finishes the regular season against league champion Crescent at Joyce on Thursday night in a tune-up for tri-districts for both teams.

Rebecca Thompson led the Red Devils with 10 kills and two aces.

“She had a really good match,” Kanichy said.

Courtney Winck had six kills while Brandy Swan earned three kills and had five aces.

Hailey Greene served five aces while her sister, Holly Greene, had a kill in the match.

Kaela Tyler also was strong in the front and back rows with four kills at the net and three service aces.

Crysandra Sones, one of four seniors playing her final home game on senior night, had a kill in the match.

Other seniors were Thompson, Winck and Ricki Manuel.

Sequim 3, Klahowya 0

SEQUIM — The Wolves rolled to an easy win on senior night, dispatching the Eagles 25-18, 25-21, 25-13 on Tuesday.

The win did nothing for Sequim’s playoff positioning, with the team already locked in as the Olympic League’s fourth seed in Saturday’s Class 2A sub-district tournament.

That puts the Wolves (5-3, 10-4) in a loser-out pigtail against the Seamount League’s fourth seeded team at 11 a.m. in Washington High School in Tacoma.

A win there would put Sequim in a match for the 9 and 11 seeds to the 2A bi-district tournament.

“It’s not our best finish but maybe its not going to matter,” Sequim head coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said of the Wolves’ fourth-place regular season.

“We’ll see what happens this weekend.”

Senior Kyla Martin had two kills, 12 digs and 19-for-19 serving with two aces in her final home match, while fellow senior Marissa Haner had six perfect passes and three kills.

Haleigh Harrison added 14 kills, four blocks and four aces, and setter Taylor Balkan had 22 assists, five aces and six digs.

Forks 3, Hoquiam 1

FORKS — The Spartans earned a playoff berth with the SWL-Evergreen Division win on senior night Tuesday.

Forks (8-5, 9-5) won 19-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-22.

The Spartans likely earned the No. 3 seed at subdistricts but it won’t be known for sure until Thursday when the final league matches of the year are played.

Forks will end the regular season at Onalaska.

Against Hoquiam, Casey Williams led Forks with 14 kills and two aces while setter Jillian Raben had 21 assists and an ace.

The two seniors on the team, Bridget Osborn and Addie Reed, were honored in their final home match.

SEQUIM — The Wolves (1-7-0, 2-12-0) saw their season end with a loss to the Eagles in Olympic League play Tuesday night.

Sequim said goodbye to seniors Rachel Dewees, Lucia Espinoza, Paige Johnson, Sarah Marble, Nikki Nace, Quinn O’Neil, Kristen Phifer, Liz Shore and Lorah Steichen.

Sequim’s lone goal came in the second half off of a kick by Courtney Weber.

North Kitsap 2, Port Angeles 0

POULSBO — The Riders lost their final Olympic League match of the season Tuesday night but still managed to come out of it with the league’s third playoff seed to districts.

Port Angeles (3-2-3, 7-5-4) will next play the SPSL’s sixth-place team in either Poulsbo or Silverdale on Wednesday, Nov. 2, in a loser-out pigtail playoff.

Win that, and the Riders will face the SPSL’s No. 2 seed in Renton on Nov. 5 with a trip to the 2A state tournament on the line.

Port Angeles last visited state in 1986.

“It’s pretty exciting to hit the playoffs three years in a row,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.

“The goal from day one has been the play in November and make it to the state tournament.

“We’ve already beat and tied teams that are state qualifiers from last year. I’m pretty confident.”

Scoring Summary

First half: No scoring.

Second Half: 1, North Kitsap, 49th; 2, North Kitsap, 62nd.

Hoquiam 3, Forks 0

FORKS — The youthful Spartans, winless on the year, had their best game by giving up only two goals in the first half, one an own goal, and not allowing the final score until there was just 1:20 left in the game.

“We played extremely well,” coach Andrew Peterson said.

“It was the first time we showed up as a team.”

Forks played its final home game of the season and feted seniors Sierra Noles and Alvina Carter.

The Spartans play their final game of the year at Ocosta on Thursday.
