PORT TOWNSEND — A save by goalkeeper Malia Henderson and five precise penalty kicks sparked Port Townsend to a shootout victory over Kingston in girls soccer action at Memorial Field.
The Redskins, 2-1 in the Olympic League and 4-5-0 overall, went ahead 2-0 in the second half only to watch the Buccaneers come back with two late goals, one with just two minutes left, to tie it up 2-all at the end of regulation.
Both teams went scoreless in overtime but Port Townsend took over in the shootout with Henderson earning the save on one of Kingston’s penalty kicks and all of the Redskins’ five kickers — Henderson, Jewel Johnson, Brenna Latchford, Alex Akins and Irina Lyons — scoring on their penalty kicks for a 5-4 shootout victory.
“This was about as exciting as it gets,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said.
“Once again Kingston had the majority of the possession but rarely troubled the PT goal.”
Kingston fell to 1-3 in league and 3-8-0 overall.
Strong start
The Redskins went ahead 1-0 in the fifth minute of the second half when they counter-attacked with a pinpoint through ball from Lyons and a finish by Johnson.
“That [play] was utterly breathtaking,” Foden said.
The two players reversed their roles in the game’s second goal, which came in the 61st minute on a corner kick.
Johnson played it to the near post, and Lyons was there to turn it in.
Kingston responded by scoring goals in the 63rd and 78th minutes to send it into overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, the Redskins had the Buccaneers right where they wanted them.
“An outstanding save by Malia Henderson meant that we could win if we scored all five penalties,” Foden said.
“Malia took the first herself, and we scored every one we took with coolness and precision.
“Several players were quite sick [for the game], but everyone put in an incredible effort and well deserved the win.”
The shorthanded Port Townsend JV team continues to play games with borrowed players from the other team.
“Kingston was generous in their supply of players, and our JV players are clearly improving,” Foden said.
The Redskins next play Klahowya at Silverdale Stadium tonight in league action.
Port Angeles 4, Bremerton 1
BREMERTON — The Roughriders dominated the Knights in Olympic League action Tuesday night.
Port Angeles opened the scoring when a Bremerton foul led to Shayla Northern’s penalty kick, which she buried in the right corner of the net.
“We’ve been working hard on perfecting penalty kicks and Shayla has the best percentage,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
“It was her first penalty kick ever and she placed it like a pro,” Moseley said.
Northern said: “I was honored to be asked to take on a potential turning point of the game, and it was exciting to make the first goal.”
Port Angeles went up 2-0 when Northern dribbled into the Bremerton defense, placed a perfect pass to Maddie Boe, who calmly finished her fourth goal of the season.
After Bremerton got one goal back in the second half, Kaitlin Boston went to work and scored the final two goals of the game.
She crushed a beautifully passed ball from Brittany McBride, and she had an unassisted goal.
The scores were her team-leading sixth and seventh goals of the season.
“It was cool to get our first win at Bremerton in awhile, and get my first goals there to help us win,” Boston said.
Boe and Boston were named co-offensive players of the game while Khaya Elliot was selected as the defensive player of the game.
Moseley named McBride and Northern the co-transition players of the game.
“We discovered a hunger in the second half and closed the deal on our win,” McBride said.
The Roughriders moved into a tie for second place in the Olympic League with a league record of 2-1, and improved to 4-5-1 overall.
The Port Angeles JV team stomped the Knights 11-0.
The Riders next play Tuesday at home against Kingston.

ELMA — The youthful Spartans continue to struggle with the SWL-Evergreen Division shutout Tuesday night.
Forks plays at Hoquiam tonight in league action.

Port Angeles 3, Bremerton 0
BREMERTON — The Roughriders easily dispatched the Knights in the first two games, only giving up a total of 21 points in them, and Port Angeles reserves held off the Knights in the third game for the Olympic League shutout.
The Riders won 25-7, 25-14, 27-25.
Holli Williams led Port Angeles with 15 assists, going 15 of 16 in serves with four aces, and she had five digs.
Bailee Jones was strong at the net with nine kills and three blocks while Madison Hinrichs earned four kills, four digs and two blocks while serving 15 of 16 with three aces.
Kendra Harvey also missed just one serve, 11 of 12, and put down four aces, and had seven digs., while Brittany Norberg had three kills and four digs.
The Riders, 2-1 in the Olympic League and 3-5 overall, have a bye today and next hosts Kingston on Tuesday.
The Port Angeles JV blanked Bremerton 3-0.

Neah Bay 0
NEAH BAY — The powerhouse Loggers blanked the youthful Red Devils in the opening North Olympic League match of the season.
Crescent improved to 6-1 overall by winning 25-10, 25-18, 25-16.
“Neah Bay is one of our biggest challengers in league but our girls stayed focused and never let up, keeping Neah Bay in the hole,” Crescent coach Alex Baker said.
Shannon Williams had a standout match for the Loggers as she was perfect in serving at 14 for 14 with three aces, and she earned four kills, four blocks and a tip at the net.
“She played very well,” Baker said.
Libero Kellie Belford was 7 of 7 in serving with an ace.
“Kellie had outstanding passing in the back row as the libero,” Baker said.
Also, Catherine Youngman served 6 of 6 and she had two kills at the net while Bonny Hazelett had an amazing seven aces while serving 10 of 12 with three kills and two tips.
“Bonny had a good match for us,” Baker said.
The Loggers next host Clallam Bay in league action tonight.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Buccaneers won the Olympic League match game 25-12, 25-17, 22-25, 25-17.
“Kingston played a smarter and scrapier game then we did [Tuesday] night,” Port Townsend coach Nettie Hawkins said.
“The silly mistakes left us hanging in the end. Our serving, on the other hand, is really playing a positive part in our season.”
Leading the Redskin highlights were Megan Juran with four kills, two aces, 100 percent serving and 10 digs while Megan Lee had seven digs and two kills.
Also, Abby McGuire had a team-high 17 digs and 11 assists while Enani Rubio earned two kills, two aces and 12 digs.
Addi Richert, meanwhile, earned 100 percent serving with five aces while Trish Reeves had two blocks and Baili Shaw produced four kills.
Port Townsend next travels to Klahowya in Silverdale tonight.

ELMA — The Spartans had one close game but otherwise rolled in the SWL-Evergreen Division match Tuesday night.
Forks won by the scores of 25-15, 25-15, 26-24.
Casey Williams had another strong all-around match, with a dominating showing at the net with 16 kills and three blocks, but she also had eight serving aces and an assist.
Setter Jillian Raben dished out 24 assists and had two serving aces while Erin Weekes earned three kills and had an assist, and Sydney Christiansen had three kills with one block and two aces.
Other highlights included Courtnie Paul with two kills, Alissa Shaw with three aces and a kill, and Karlee Hansen with three aces.
Forks next will play at Hoquiam tonight.

The Wolves didn’t drop a set in doubles as Matthew Richards and Brandon Payne beat Cody Champine and Noah Wilson 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, Eli Berg and Saul Nava won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, Dan Willis and Kevin Cassal won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 and Royhon Agostine and Brendon Hudson won 6-3 6-0 at No. 4.
