SPORTS: Port Townsend boys soccer advances in playoffs; Sequim girls golf team nips rival Port Angeles; other prep reports

PORT TOWNSEND — It wasn’t golden, but it was exactly what the Port Townsend boys soccer team needed.

Sam Selisch scored a goal in the waning moments of extra time, boosting the Redskins to a 2-1 win in their loser-out Class 1A subdistrict playoff against Cascade Christian on Thursday.

Selisch’s goal not only saved Port Townsend from risking its season on a shootout, it also put the Redskins in another loser-out playoff with Vashon Island in Orting on Saturday.

The winner of that game moves on to the 1A Tri-District playoffs.

“I feel good [about Saturday’s game] if we play our game like we did tonight,” Port Townsend coach Patrick Kane said.

“I really don’t know anything about [Vashon] except that they are the No. 3 team out of the Nisqually.

“I expect a good match. I don’t expect anything less.”

Kane had been prepared for what appeared to be an inevitable shootout on Thursday, picking his five players before the first five-minute overtime began.

Selisch and company kept that from happening.

The senior midfielder got the ball at the top of the penalty box with less than a minute remaining, then blasted the game-winner into the upper right hand corner of the net to set off a Redskins celebration.

The Redskins still had to play out the remainder of the game since there are no golden goals (think: sudden death) in district playoff games.

Once the final whistle blew 30 seconds later, the Redskins’ comeback from a 1-0 first half deficit was complete.

“We finally starting playing as a team defensively, and we controlled the ball much better [after the goal],” said Kane, giving credit defenders Noah Nelson, Kody Whipple and Aaron Owen.

Sebastian Lyons scored the equalizer in the 43rd minute.

SEQUIM — The Wolves found the perfect capper for a perfect season: a narrow victory over their rivals.

Zoei Zbaraschuk won match medalist honors for the 23rd straight time in her final Olympic League contest, and the Wolves clinched an outright league title in winning Thursday’s nine-hole match at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course.

The Sequim senior shot a 1-over par 38 to run away from the field.

Teammate Hailey Estes shot a 43 for 30 modified stableford points and Kim Duce added a 49, helping the Wolves dethrone the reigning league champion Roughriders.

“It’s huge for this group of girls,” Wolves (7-0 in league, 9-0 overall) coach Garrett Smithson said.

“It was kind of a goal from the start of the season to win the Olympic League. They are all very happy right now, and so am I.

“It’s a good feeling.”

Estes’ score, which tied Port Angeles’ Tracie DuPuis for the second-best nine-hole tally on the day, was her best of the season.

And in a match that came down to a margin of just six points, it was the difference between winning and losing, Smithson said.

“Hailey’s was kind of the score that won us the match,” Smithson said.

Sequim last won a share of the league crown in 2006. Smithson said he wasn’t sure when the last time Sequim claimed league outright.

Of course, few Sequim teams in the past have been led by a golfer like Zbaraschuk, who will play for Sonoma State University next season.

“Zoei’s obviously an outstanding individual player, but this year she’s kind of rallied the girls together,” Smithson said. “It’s put a nice mojo on the team.”

Port Angeles fell to Sequim for the second time this season, having dropped a nonleague match earlier this spring.

DuPuis’ 38 led the Riders on Thursday, with Emily Cook adding a 50 and Ev Grier a 51.

“It was a great match, and that’s how we wanted it to end . . . having a close one [with PA],” Smithson said. “It was pretty cool watch.”

Port Angeles will compete in the 3A Olympic League tournament Monday at Dungeness, while Sequim will take part in the 2A event the next day.

PORT ANGELES — The Trojans received the playoff spot through a complicated formula but the Roughriders got the last laugh in an Olympic League showdown Thursday night.

“I’m really proud of our team,” coach Chris Saari said. “We got better as the season progressed and played our best soccer at the end of the year, which gives us hope for next year.”

The Riders led 2-0 before the Trojans scored with two minutes to play.

Luis Neumeier and Abinet Hayden scored the goals while Neumeier had an assist.

Saari named Hayden offensive player of the match and Max Bukovnik defensive player while Kyle Bingham and Tamrat Haskins received transition players of the match honors.
