SPORTS: Port Townsend rumbles to 67-39 win; other prep football reports

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend racked up 606 yards of offense in a 67-39 smackdown over Nisqually League foe Bellevue Christian at Memorial Field on Friday night.

Though the Redskins had long runs by Tim Russell, Jacob King, Mitiku Little and Matt Cain, head coach Nick Snyder credits the offensive line for the offensive explosion.

“They were tremendous up front, huge holes,” Snyder said.

According to Snyder, the 67 points is the most Port Townsend has scored since 2003 when they scored 75.

The Redskins got started early, putting 27 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter and 41 by halftime.

Russell scored the first touchdown of the game with a 1-yard run.

After that, most of the Redskins’ scores came from long distances.

Russell added a 62-yard touchdown run.

Jacob King had touchdown runs of 40 and 87 yards.

Little scored on a 57-yard run.

Cain had a 27- and 43-yard touchdown runs, as well as a 45-yard interception return.

In the fourth quarter, Wesley Wheeler closed out the scoring with a 17-yard run.

The win is Port Townsend’s second of the season. Earlier this year they ended a 20-game losing streak that dated back to 2009.

The Redskins host Vashon Island (0-3, 0-4) on Friday night.

Crescent 50,

Rainier Christ. 26

KENT — It took a big finish for the Loggers to dispose of the pesky Mustangs on Friday night at Kentlake High School.

After Rainier Christian tied the game at 20 in the third quarter, Crescent went on a 30-0 tear.

After tying the score, the Mustangs (0-4) attempted an onside kick.

But Crescent’s Sage Fadness returned it to the Rainier Christian 8-yard line.

“[Mike] Zapien crashed it in from there and it was off to the races for us,” Loggers coach Darrell Yount said.

Zapien’s 4-yard touchdown run was followed by a 13-yard run by Eric Larson, and then Derek Findley scored on runs of 7 and 30 yards to put the Loggers ahead 50-20.

Crescent could have pulled away much earlier in the game.

The Loggers (4-0) didn’t capitalize on three scoring opportunities in the first half.

They fumbled twice inside the Rainier Christian 10 yard line and Findley dropped a 60-yard pass from Beau Bamer that would have resulted in a touchdown.

“This game could have effectively been over at halftime and it really should have been,” Yount said.

“But we kind of shot ourselves in the foot, what with the turnovers and the miscues.

“But give Rainier credit. They ere fast and athletic, ran a crazy multi-misdirection offense and simply held to their game plan. They’re a good football team.”

The Loggers ran for 412 yards, but Yount was most impressed with the defense.

“The play of Travis Walker and Sage Fadness defensively was huge for us,” he said.

“Both were playing in their first games of the season after just becoming available.

“Walker is just a big, big hitter, and Fadness provided lock-down pass coverage, came up with two picks and the huge kick return.”

Crescent next faces Clallam Bay (2-1) in Joyce on Saturday afternoon.

Quilcene 16, Clallam Bay 14

CLALLAM BAY — The Rangers nipped the Bruins in an exciting 1B nonleague game that was decided by a missed two-point conversion.

It was the first win of the year for the Rangers, 1-3, while the Bruins suffered their first loss, 2-1.

Quilcene was missing starting quarterback Josh King, who had a sprained ankle, and two other starters who were suspended, and had only 12 players suited up for the game.

“I was very impressed with the kids,” Quilcene coach Nic Dahl said. “The kids played super hard. They played their hearts out.”

Clallam Bay, meanwhile, plans to regroup after the tough loss, Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said.

“An important thing [about football] is that you don’t judge a team just by their wins, but how they rebound from tough losses,” he said.

“We hope to [bounce back] next week.”

The Bruins play at tough 4-0 Crescent this coming Saturday.

The Rangers lighted up the scoreboard first when J.J. Smith ran 4 yards to paydirt and then Josh Steele ran the ball in for the two-point conversion in the first quarter.

Clallam Bay tied the game in the second quarter on Matt Mohr’s 60-yard run and a two-point pass from Austin Ritter to Ryan Willis.

The score remained at 8-all at halftime.

The Rangers went up 16-8 in the third quarter on quarterback Justin Williams 1-yard sneak and Steele’s second two-point conversion run of the game.

That second conversion became the difference for the game.

The Bruins scored in the third when Mohr ran 25 yards for the score.

But the two-point pass conversion failed.

Williams was 3 of 10 passing for 97 yards and an interception for the Rangers while Smith caught all three passes.

It was tough going on the ground for Quilcene as Steele led the way with 19 carries for 58 yards, and Lucas Murphy rushed for 25 yards on 17 touches.

Austin Ritter was 4 of 9 passing for the Bruins for 33 yards and two interceptions.

Clallam Bay was strong on the ground as Mohr ran for 258 yards on 22 carries and Jeremy Rock rushed 12 times for 50 yards and Austin Ritter earned 21 yards on six carries.

“Matt Mohr is our workhorse,” Cal Ritter said. “He’s a strong and real fast kid.”

Mohr also led the Clallam Bay defense with 18 tackles while Rock had an interception.

Senior defensive end Drew Goplen-Dean, out for his first game this year, had 12 tackles and two sacks for the Bruins.

“We played real well on defense,” Cal Ritter said.

“What hurt us was our offensive line play.”

Tyson Svetich led the Rangers on defense with 12 tackles and an interception while Murphy added nine tackles and Brandon Bessey had seven tackles and an interception.

SILVERDALE — The Roughriders are still looking for their first win of the season after losing to the Trojans 29-7 in Olympic League action Friday night at Silverdale Stadium.

The win was the first for Olympic in 2012.

Port Angeles fell behind 2-0 early in the game when junior running back Nick Lasorsa was tackled in the end zone.

But the Riders and Lasorsa bounced back and took a 7-2 lead when the junior running back scored on a 10-yard run.

That was the last Port Angeles would see of the end zone, whereas the Trojans (1-1, 1-3) were just getting started.

Ben Long was the main culprit, scoring two touchdowns and compiling 173 yards on 12 carriers.

“This was a nice win,” Olympic interim coach Brad Hamblet told the Kitsap Sun.

“We played a full game. That’s what we focused on all week. We’ve been in all three games, and it was nice to finally put it all together.”

Next up for Port Angeles (0-2, 0-4) is its homecoming game Friday against Klahowya (0-2, 2-2), who lost at Kingston 34-28,
