SPORTS: Port Townsend sweeps archrival Chimacum in boys and girls basketball; other prep reports

CHIMACUM –Experience won out over youth as the young Chimacum girls basketball team battled veteran archrival Port Townsend in nonleague action Wednesday night.

The Port Townsend boys beat Chimacum 49-42.

The Redskins, with eight seniors, beat the Cowboys, with one senior, 65-41.

Chimacum’s senior, Kaylie Castillo, didn’t even play in the second half after hurting her knee at the end of the first half after scoring eight points.

The Cowboys led 14-13 after one quarter of play but the Redskins took a 29-22 lead at halftime anc cruised to the win.

“We were doing fine before our only senior hurt her knee,” Chimacum coach Brad Burlingame said.

The Redskins had three players score in double figures as Caroline Dowdle canned a game-high 18 points, Kerri Evalt sank 15 and Kiley Maag had 12.

Sophomore Mallori Cossell had a team-high 14 points for Chimacum while Cydney Nelson scored nine and Castillo finished with her eight.

Cossell had a hot hand for the Cowboys, making 2-of-5 baskets from beyond the 3-point line and she was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.

“Mallori is playing better and better every game,” Burlingame said.

Freshman Lauren Thacker had a team-high eight rebounds for the Cowboys.

Chimacum now is 5-9 overall. The Cowboys, 3-3 in the Nisqually League, have a tough conference game at home against Cascade Christian on Friday night.

POULSBO — The Redskins opened with a big lead in the first quarter and never looked back in the Olympic League game Tuesday night.

Port Townsend jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter and settled for a 30-20 halftime advantage.

Kiley Maag and Bella Fox combined for 39 points to spark the Redskins. Maag had a game-high 22 while Fox added 17.

Kerri Evalt added 10 points.

Maag also had six rebounds and six assists while Fox was the leader on the boards with 13 and she had two blocks and two assists.

Caroline Dowdle also had a strong game with 12 rebounds, nine points, eight assists and six steals.

CHIMACUM — Mallori Cossell, Cydney Nelson and Lauren Thacker all scored in double figures to lead the Cowboys to the Nisqually League win Tuesday night.

Cossell led everybody with 16 points while Nelson sank 15 and Thacker had 12.

Chimacum led most of the way.

The Cowboys had a 17-12 advantage in the first quarter, 27-19 at halftime and 43-34 at the end of three.

Orting outscored the Cowboys by seven points in the final period to make it close.

JOYCE — The Red Devils were too much for the Loggers in the North Olympic League game.

Crescent was held to no points in the fourth quarter.

Rebecca Thompson and Merissa Murner led the Red Devils with 15 points each while Courtney Winck was right behind with 13.

Sara Moore led the Loggers with 12 points.

Boys Basketball Port Townsend 49, Chimacum 42

CHIMACUM — The Redskins came roaring back in the fourth quarter after the Cowboys held a 28-24 lead going into the final period in the nonleague game Wednesday night.

Port Townsend outscored Chimacum 25-14 in the fourth stanza to earn the win down the stretch.

“We had defensive lapses and they scored five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter,” Chimacum coach Jim Eldridge said.

The Redskins had seven 3-pointers for the game.

Seiji Thielk of Port Townsend led everybody with 20 points, including making 6-of-7 free throws in the final period.

Hab Rubio scored 14 for the Redskins.

The Cowboys next host powerhouse Cascade Christian in a Nisqually League game Friday night.

Neah Bay 57, Crescent 31

JOYCE — The Logger stayed within six points in the first half but the Red Devils ran away in the second half with an 33-13 advantage to break the game open.

“Our guys played really hard against a good team,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said.

“Whenever you can hang with Neah Bay for a half, you are doing well.”

Titus Pascua led Neah Bay with 16 points while Eli Monette added nine.

Crescent’s Joel Williams led everybody with 20 points.

Wrestling Klahowya 54, Port Angeles 24

SILVERDALE — The Roughriders fell to the No. 4-ranked Eagles in Olympic League action Wednesday night.

Port Angeles was wrestling with a less than full team. Illness and injuries have been taking their toll along with the fact that some competitors are getting close to the maximum matches they can wrestle during the regular season.

The limit is 33 and a few Riders are close to that mark.

“We won’t have a full team when we come back here for the Klahowya Invitational on Saturday,” Port Angeles coach Erik Gonzalez said.

Winning for the Riders on Wednesday were Andrew Symonds with a pin in 1:44 at 140 pounds; Kody Steele with a 5-2 decision at 145; Nathan Cristion with a 9-3 decision at 189; Jacob Dostie with a pin at 5:54 at 215; and Daniel Jenkins with a pin at 1:38 at 285.

Standout wrestler Cristion beat Jess Haga, ranked No. 3 in state at 189. Cristion is ranked No. 2.

Kingston 48, Port Townsend 25

KINGSTON — The Redskins had a tough time against the powerful Buccaneers in Olympic League competition Wednesday.

Port Townsend won three competition matches as Dillon Ralls beat Brandon Dryden 15-7 in a major decision at 125 pounds, Alex Morris pinned Natel Lise in 43 seconds at 140 and Kris Windle beat Sam Eniglis 5-3 at 152.

Sequim 51, North Kitsap 30

POULSBO — The Wolves had four pins and four forfeits to smash the Vikings in Olympic League action Wednesday.

Winning by pin were Austin Middleton at 130 pounds, Luke Mooney at 135, Cody Field at 145 and Lopaka Yasumura at 160.

JackWiker won 10-5 at 189.

Bowling Sequim end of season

SEQUIM — The Wolves fell 7-0 in their last regular-season meet against Olympic on Jan. 13.

Sequim finished Olympic League action with a 2-9 record while Olympic tied with Klahowya for first with 10-2 marks each.

Bremerton finished 6-5 for third while North Mason was in last place at 1-11.

Kim Duce led the Wolves during the season, finishing in ninth place with an average game score of 163 in 22 games.

Sage Brown tied for 16th place in league with an average of 153.
