PORT TOWNSEND — Cody Russell pitched Port Townsend’s baseball team to its first win of the season Tuesday, a 6-5 victory over Kingston.
Russell struck out six and pitched all six innings for the Redskins.
“Cody gutted it out,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said.
Russell enjoyed support from the Redskins’ bats.
Devon Courtney led off the game with a home run to left field that gave Port Townsend a 1-0 lead.
But the Redskins (1-10, 1-11) have a habit of scoring early and then going silent.
Kingston (1-9) scored a run in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 3-1 lead, but Port Townsend scored the next five runs — three in the fourth and two in the sixth — to take a 6-3 lead into the final inning.
“We had good situational hitting,” Webster said. “We didn’t leave our bats on our shoulders.”
Freshman Jacob Ralls drove in three runs and Emmett Davis and Matt Cain drove in one apiece.
Courtney also made a huge defensive play, throwing out a Kingston base runner at the plate from center field in the seventh inning.
Port Townsend plays at Olympic League-leading Bremerton (9-1, 10-4) on Friday.

The Beavers jumped on Forks early, opening up a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning.
The Spartans responded with two runs in their half of the third and five in the fourth to even the score at 7-7.
Tenino was leading 10-9 going into the seventh.

Pederson was 3 for 4 in the game with three RBI.
“He had a great game,” Spartans coach Wayne Daman said.
“He responded well to some adversity that he had on the defensive part of the field. He came back and redeemed himself.”
Nick Gilmore and Reece Moody drove in a run apiece, and Javier Contreras and Hagan both contributed three hits to the winning effort.
“I’m really proud of the boys. They fought hard and never gave up,” Daman said.
“We got in a hole early but were able to keep putting crooked numbers up on the scoreboard and get back in the game, and win a tight ball game.”

PORT ANGELES — Abinet Hayden of Port Angeles made two goals, but the Bulldogs scored three in the second half to earn the Olympic League win.
“We made too many mistakes to overcome the Bulldogs,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.
“It was a key game for trying to get out of last place and keep our playoff hopes alive, but we couldn’t get the job done.”
The Riders were ahead 3-2 at halftime in the offensive-minded game thanks to the two goals by Hayden and one by Jeremy Choe.
North Mason scored first on a Colin Ralston free kick at 17 minutes but Choe tied it up on a corner kick 5 minutes later.
Ralston ended up with four goals in the game.
Hayden gave the Riders a 2-1 lead on a Miki Andrus assist at 28 minutes but ralston tied it up on a corner kick at 33 minutes.

SILVERDALE — All the goals were scored in the first half but the Wolves dominated the second half, outshooting the Eagles 10-2.
Sequim is in third place in the Olympic League at 7-4-0 and 23 points.
The second-half shots just couldn’t find the back of the net, though, even though there were some close misses.
Mason Barrett missed two close shots, including hitting the cross-bar at one point.
Barrett scored the winning goal at 32 minutes on a classic team play.
Defenders Bailey Collins and Hector Baylon started the play in the backfield, Omar Flores took the ball in the midfield and then passed to Barrett, who put the ball in the net for the 2-1 lead.
“That was a total team goal,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.
The opening goal was scored by Sequim’s Brandon Payne, who scored on a Flores assist at 4 minutes.
Klahowya tied it up with a goal at 23 minutes.
The Wolves had 15 shots in the game.
Brasher named Payne the player of the match.
“Brandon played real well,” Brasher said.

Port Townsend 2, Bremerton 1
BREMERTON — The 1A Redskins started out hot, scoring in the third minute, and then held on for the Olympic League win over the 2A Knights.
Port Townsend junior Daniel Charlton scored off of a Max Meier assist to get the Redskins off to a great start.
The score could have been much more lopsided but Charlton’s half-a-dozen additional sure-goal shots found every possible surface of the goal — except for the back of the Bremerton net.
Charlton wasn’t alone as Port Townsend outshot Bremerton 16-5.
The Knights also held a tight off-side defense, trapping Port Townsend seven times in the first half alone.
Port Townsend sealed the victory with a 38th minute finish inside a crowded Bremerton box as junior midfielder Paul Spaltenstein scored on an assist by Charlton.
In the JV game, the Knights scored an injury-time goal to salvage a 3-3 tie with the Redskins.
Port Townsend is current tied for fourth with Olympic (19 points each) it next hosts third place Sequim (7-4-0, 23 points) this coming Tuesday at Memorial Stadium.
