SPORTS: Quilcene football team looking for new opponent this weekend

QUILCENE — Continuing a trend that has plagued North Olympic Peninsula high school football teams, Mary M. Knight has canceled its game with Quilcene.

The Rangers and Owls were scheduled to face off Saturday, but Mary M. Knight informed Quilcene on Wednesday that it was backing out of the game due to a lack of eligible players.

“It’s frustrating, because the kids have worked so hard,” Rangers coach Nic Dahl told the Peninsula Daily News on Thursday morning.

Quilcene athletic director Mark Thompson was scrambling to find a replacement opponent, but had yet to secure one by Thursday afternoon.

Neah Bay has already had to find two new opponents this season.

The Red Devils will play at Odessa-Harrington tonight after Cusick canceled its scheduled game with Neah Bay.

A lack of eligible players forced Chimacum to cancel its season opener against Forks last week.

Head coach Shawn Meacham told the PDN on Thursday that his team now has 25 eligible players, so the Cowboys’ game against Klahowya will take place tonight.
