PORT ANGELES — The on-and-off rainy weather has been teasing North Olympic Peninsula high school spring sports, wiping out some events with heavy rain or hardly causing a ripple in other places with a few sprinkles here and there.
And even though Port Angeles was one of the drier places on the Peninsula during a wet and stormy Tuesday, the archrival Port Angeles and Sequim girls tennis teams had to postpone their match a second time on the Port Angeles courts Tuesday afternoon.
The match was postponed from Monday when there was light rain in the afternoon, to Tuesday.
The teams were about halfway through their matches when the event was postponed a second time when it started sprinkling.
“We have old courts, and we have a little dirt on them,” Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen said.
“It doesn’t take much moisture to make them really slick.”
For safety reasons, the match was postponed until later.
“We probably won’t reschedule the match until after spring break,” Gundersen said.
Trying to beat rain
A lot of baseball and softball teams were scrambling Tuesday, trying to get games in between rain drops knowing that spring break will visit most area school districts next week.
There were some big wins on the Peninsula as Port Angeles baseball coach Bob Withrow won his 100th game coaching the Roughriders, the Chimacum defending state champion baseball team remained undefeated on the year, and Sequim’s defending state champion softball team barely remained perfect by beating Olympic by one run in extra innings.
Chimacum’s game was ended after five innings because of rain.

Port Townsend 2, Klahowya 1
SILVERDALE — The Redskins concluded nonleague play with the victory over the Eagles on Tuesday.
“Our offense played well today,” Port Townsend coach Steve Shively said.
“We challenged them to convert scoring opportunities and put more shots on frame. [Tuesday night’s] results were positive proof of their efforts.”
It helped that Nick Silberman came off the sidelines after a long illness.
In the 21st minute, Silberman was fouled in the Klahowya goal box, drawing the penalty kick.
He converted the kick, sending Port Townsend up 1-0.
The Redskins never looked back.
In the 40th minute, seconds before halftime, Silberman slotted a midfield through-ball to the top of the Klahowya box.
Mitiku Little flicked it on just as the Klahowya goalie was committing for the attempted save.
The flick-on went to the feet of Max Meier, who drove it home for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Solid Port Townsend midfield play dominated the second half, led by Dylan Holbrook, Harrison Hodgson and Luke Coppenrath.
“Klahowya tirelessly tried over-the-top offensive runs,” Shively said, “but the slick surface and our fast defenders closed out nearly every one of their efforts.”
Port Townsend begins Olympic League competition with a 6:45 p.m. kick-off at North Kitsap in Poulsbo today.
North Kitsap 2, Port Angeles 0

Tamrat Haskins was named offensive player of the game for the Riders while Same Beasley was the defensive player and Austin Fahrenholtz earned transition player honors.
