SPORTS: Reid’s walk-off home run propels Port Angeles softball to win; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — Ashlee Reid’s walk-off two-run homer gave Port Angeles a 6-4 Olympic League softball victory over Olympic.

Khason Politika also ripped a home run for the perfect Roughriders at Dry Creek athletic fields Tuesday.

Port Angeles, 4-0 in league, had defensive problems for the second game in a row, committing five errors and giving up four unearned runs to help the Trojans stay in the contest.

Olympic (2-2) tied the game 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning with two unearned runs.

Carly Gouge made an outstanding diving catch in short right-center field to get the Riders out of the inning.

Sarah Steinman, the starting pitcher who gave up no earned runs in five innings, opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk, setting the table for Reid’s walk-off home run to left field to win the game.

Cara Cristion went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Steinman was 1 of 2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Leadoff batter Maddy Hinrichs was 1 for 3, scoring a run and knocking a run in.

Raelyn Lucas went 2 for 3 at bat.

Boys Soccer

North Mason 2, Sequim 1, SO

BELFAIR — The Bulldogs (3-4-0) surprised the Wolves (4-2-0) in the Olympic League shootout game Tuesday night.

The teams were tied 0-0 at halftime and 1-all at the end of regulation and overtime.

“North Mason played a really good game, catching us off guard,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.

“They forced us into a long-ball game, and took us into the penalty-kick shootout.”

The Wolves outshot the Bulldogs 6-2 in the scoreless first half but neither team could get the ball home.

A Nicholas Baird shot bounced off the crossbar and just missed for the Wolves.

North Mason got on the board first in the 47th minute by Miguel Sebastian.

“That was a nice shot on the right side,” Brasher said.

The goal came on a defensive breakdown by the Wolves.

Backup goalkeeper Dorian Halverson played for the Wolves when starter Austin Wagner couldn’t play because of illness.

“Halverson played an excellent game for us,” Brasher said.

“He had four nice saves, including a diving save in the 73rd minute that North Mason almost scored on.”

Sequim stayed alive with a goal in the final minute of regulation.

The play started with a Baird kick in the corner.

Cameron Chase scored on a nifty pass by Ron Welches.

The teams did went scoreless in the two 5-minute overtime periods before the Bulldogs won the shootout 5-3 for the final 2-1 score.

“They had five great shots that we really couldn’t do anything about,” Brasher said.

Junior defender Bailey Collins was named the player of the match for Sequim for playing well in back.

“Alex Oppfelt had good play off the bench and Cameron Chase played well for us also,” Brasher said.

The Wolves earned a point for the shootout loss.

“Our kids played a scrappy game,” Brasher said.

Scoring a late goal was crucial to staying in the game and picking up that important point for the standings, he added.

The Wolves next host undefeated Olympic (6-0-0) tonight at Sequim High School.

“We’re excited about that,” Brasher said.
