SPORTS: Sequim boys basketball team holds off Port Townsend; other prep reports

PORT TOWNSEND — Sequim overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half to nip Port Townsend in an Olympic League boys basketball game Tuesday night.

The Wolves, behind the combined 19 points of Frank Catelli and Josh McMinn, beat the Redskins 45-41 after trailing 33-24 at the end of three quarters of play.

Sequim (7-4, 7-7) outscored Port Townsend (3-8, 5-10) 21-8 in the final stanza to pull away with the win.

“Our offense left us in the second half,” Port Townsend coach John Stroeder said.

The Wolves ran the half-court trap in the second half. Even though the Redskins handled it well, their shots weren’t dropping.

“We got open looks but we couldn’t buy a basket,” Stroeder said.

“But you have to give Sequim credit. They did a good job. They pressured us, went flying around, making their 3s.”

Frank Catelli led a balanced Sequim attack with 10 points while McMinn added nine. John Textor sank eight points.

McMinn and Frank Catelli scored most of their points in the second half.

“They were a great combination for us in the second half,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said.

“And Kenny Meier led us defensively.”

Eric Thomas and Evan O’Brien of Port Townsend shared game scoring honors with 15 points each.

Next, the Redskins host North Kitsap and the Wolves play at Kingston on Friday night.

That’s all the Spartans needed to snap a five-game losing streak.

“I think they just took what they had to say to heart,” Forks said of the halftime talk from his former players.

“I just had to come in and talk Xs and Os.”

Frank Noles put up a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Fernando Hernandez added six points, nine rebounds and five steals.

Brady Castellano added six points and five steals, Jonah Penn eight points and Braden Decker seven points.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins (2-7, 2-10) managed to win the Olympic League game even without their point guard.

Starting point guard Caroline Dowdle missed the game because of illness but junior wing Kerri Evalt stepped in at that position and didn’t miss a beat.

“Kerri played the game of her life in the first half,” Port Townsend coach Randy Maag said.

Evalt scored 12 of her 15 points in the first half to help give the Redskins a 34-22 lead at halftime.

The Wolves came back in the third quarter, tying the game at 40-40 going into the final period.

But the Redskins came alive with an 18-7 advantage that sealed the win.

Kiley Maag also had 15 points for Port Townsend while Brooke Little sank 11 and Garrison-Fox had 10 inside points.

“Sequim has some nice guards but they didn’t have an answer for our inside game,” Randy Maag said. “Fox dominated inside for us.”
