SPORTS: Sequim boys basketball team remains perfect on year; other prep reports

BELFAIR — The Sequim boys basketball team came into the season regarded as one of the Olympic League’s top teams.

After winning its fifth straight to begin the year Friday night, it’s starting to look like Sequim (3-0 in league, 5-0 overall) is one of the state’s best as well.

Senior guard Evan Hill scored a career-high 22 points, and freshman Alex Barry added 12 points to lead the Wolves to a 56-28 drubbing of North Mason.

With the Bulldogs intent on stopping senior all-league guard Corbin Webb with a box-and-one defense, the two sharpshooters combined to hit eight 3-pointers.

“Of course, Corbin after he scored 32 [in a win over 3A Peninsula] was going to draw attention,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said.

“I’m just really happy with how patient we were. We missed a couple of looks early, but we kept going to those guys, Evan and Alex Barry, and they made some big shots for us.”

Sequim has been playing without all-league forward Gabe Carter, who broke his left pinky finger during the team’s first game of the year, almost from the start of the season.

In his absence, the Wolves have managed to beat a pair of Class 3A teams in Peninsula and Bainbridge and start off the Olympic League schedule 3-0.

Sequim stands as the last remaining unbeaten in the league, with defending champion Kingston even falling once to the same Bainbridge team the Wolves topped 56-52 on Nov. 30.

Friday’s win proved to be a little less challenging as the Wolves limited North Mason (0-3, 0-4) to just 12 first-half points and 19 after three quarters.

Hill knocked down five three-pointers and Barry three, taking advantage of several open looks afforded them by the Bulldogs’ zone defense.

Sequim faces a bit of a challenge this week with three games in five days, beginning with a league matchup at Bremerton (1-1, 1-3) on Monday.

The Wolves will then host Klahowya (2-0, 2-4) on Wednesday before traveling to North Kitsap (2-1, 2-2) on Friday.

ORTING — All of the sudden, the Cowboys are looking like Nisqually League contenders.

Chimacum (1-0, 5-0) won its fifth straight in Friday night’s league opener, riding another offensive barrage from its three-guard lineup.

Landon Cray scored a game-high 23 points, Quinn Eldridge added 22 and Rafael Pagasian 13 as the Cowboys raced out to a 35-25 halftime lead and didn’t look back.

“I’ll take the win, but we got to play better than this against better teams,” Chimacum coach Jim Eldridge said. “It wasn’t our best game, we didn’t shoot the ball that well.

“We were just better athletes than they were. Landon Cray and Rafael could pretty much take the ball to the hole whenever they wanted to.”

As it was, the Cowboys sank eight 3-pointers.

They played Olympic on the road Saturday night after press time.

ORTING — Mallori Cossell took over in the fourth quarter to spark the Cowboys to the crucial Nisqually League win Friday night.

Orting was one of three teams in league that the Cowboys had to beat if they wanted to challenge for a playoff spot, Chimacum coach Brad Burlingame said earlier in the week.

Chimacum (1-0, 2-3) took care of business as Cossell scored 16 points in the game, most of them coming in the final period. She netted four 3-pointers

Cydney Nelson added 11 and Ke Ke Snyder scored eight. Nelson also had six steals.

Krista Hathaway, meanwhile, was a thorn in Orting’s side defensively.

“Krista did a great job on defense for us,” Burlingame said.

Hathaway grabbed seven rebounds and had four steals.

“The story is that we always have one bad quarter and that came in the first quarter for us in this game,” Burlingame said.

The Cowboys scored only five points in the first period but outscored Orting 28-21 in the second half to erase a 15-13 halftime deficit.
