SPORTS: Sequim boys soccer team shuts out Port Townsend in Olympic League game; other prep reports

PORT TOWNSEND — The shutouts keep coming for the Sequim boys soccer team.

The Wolves took advantage of a short-handed Port Townsend squad for a 3-0 Olympic League win on Thursday night.

It was Sequim’s fourth shutout win in six games this season, with its opponents’ only regulation goal coming in the first game of the season.

“‘I like the way we’re playing,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.

As well he should.

If his Wolves (3-1 in league, 5-1 overall) keep this up, they just might challenge the shutout mark put up by last year’s state playoff team (9) or even the school record (10) recorded by the 2004 state team.

“I don’t see much difference from last year, ,” Redskins coach Patrick Kane said of Sequim’s defense.

“They play very well as a unit, and they organize in the back. They don’t panic.”

They also took little pity on a Port Townsend team missing one of its key offensive players (Sam Selish) and five other starters due to spring break.

Sequim senior John Textor scored the Wolves’ first goal in the 20th minute off a Daniel Servin assist.

It took awhile for the Wolves to break through again, however, with scores from David Richards and Mitch McHugh not coming until late in the second half against a game Redskins (1-3, 3-4) squad.

Sophomore goalkeeper Byron Boots came up with a pair of clutch saves in between the goals to make sure the score held up.

“I thought we played a good game with Sequim,” Kane said. “We stayed with them pretty much the whole game, so I’m not disappointed at all.

“I was putting kids in that will probably never see varsity time again this year. They held their own.”

Sequim outshot Port Townsend 17-7 on the night.

“We’re trying to find the right combo, and everybody seems to be contributing,” Brasher said. “We were a little bit off tonight. It took us a while to get rolling, but we’re playing well.

“We’re still trying to find the max lineup, but for the most part I’m pretty happy.”

Sequim hosts Forks in a nonleague game tonight, while Port Townsend’s next game isn’t until next Thursday at home against Bremerton.

SILVERDALE — The Trojans outshot the Roughriders 16-6 en-route to an Olympic League victory Thursday night.

“They just completely controlled the ball and the pace of the game,” coach Chris Sari said.

“And we were unable to capitalize on the few opportunities we did get.”

Backup goalkeeper Forrest Emmett played a solid game in the net, holding the Trojans to a single goal in each half.

Forrest Epstine and Max Bukovnik were named offensive and defensive players of the game, respectively.

Port Angeles (0-3-0, 1-7-0) will host their first league home game against North Mason on Tuesday.
