SPORTS: Sequim defeats Port Angeles 4-2 in softball; other reports

SEQUIM — This time it wasn’t as easy.

The Sequim softball team beat its archrival Port Angeles 4-2 in Olympic League action Wednesday.

The Wolves (8-1, 11-2) beat the Roughriders (6-3, 7-6) 11-0 when the teams first played earlier in the season.

“Stacy Webb is getting into better pitching shape,” Sequim coach Mel Hendrickson said about the Port Angeles ace pitcher. “She pitched a pretty good game,” he said.

And, of course, Sequim ace Demiree Briones pitched another outstanding game, holding the Riders to three hits while striking out eight and walking only two.

Briones improved to 7-1 in league and 10-2 overall.

“This was a great high school game that matched up our pitchers,” Port Angeles coach Buddy Bear said.

“What was good for both of us was the closeness of the score and the type of competition we needed to see to give us momentum going into the playoffs.”

This game was touch-and-go the whole way with the Riders taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning and Sequim getting the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Port Angeles tied it up with a run in the fifth but the Wolves took the lead for good with two in the bottom of the sixth with the help of two Port Angeles mistakes.

Lea Hopson started the winning rally with a single while Maddy Zbaraschuk and Briones got on via Rider errors.

Hopson scored when Briones got on base.

Chelsea Winfield then knocked in Zbaraschuk with an RBI-single.

Sequim scored the two runs with no outs.

Hopson went 2-for-2 with a home run while Sequim’s Chelsea Winfield and Jazzy Bradbury both were 2-for-3 each.

Kelsey Hinsdale led the Riders by going 3-for-3 with an RBI while Sade Pimentel was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Hannah Wahto went 2-for-4.

The Wolves next are scheduled to play Bremerton on Friday but Hendrickson said the game might be moved up to today.

Baseball Sequim 7, Klahowya 6

SILVERDALE – The Wolves escaped a wild seventh inning Tuesday to beat their 2A Olympic League counterparts for the second time this season.

Sequim pitchers walked in three runs in the bottom of the seventh before senior closer Jeremie Oliver saved the game on a strikeout with the bases loaded and two outs.

“The ump just really got tight,” said Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen, whose pitchers walked five batters that inning. “He just changed the zone all of the sudden.”

Oliver’s heroics gave starter Matt Bereiter, in control during most of the six-plus innings he was on the hill, his first win of the season.

Bereiter struck out 11 and gave up just six hits before giving way to his brother, Mike, in the seventh.

Preston McFarland led the Wolves at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Matt Rief was 1-for-4, his two-run double being the key hit in a five-run top of the fourth for Sequim.

Girls Tennis Port Angeles 5, Sequim 2

SEQUIM – The Wolves won the two top matches but the Roughriders won everything else in the Olympic League match Wednesday.

Sequim ace Kyla Hall beat Alexis Corn 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Katrina Chan/Stacy Hanson of Sequim beat Sam Manwell/Grace Van Rossen in a tight No. 1 doubles match, 7-5, 6-4.

The Riders (6-1), though, won the rest of the singles and doubles matches.

Singles winners were Chelsea Drake and Shayla Bohman while earning doubles wins were the teams of Chantel La/Mallory Hoch, Caylie Cook/Laney Boyd and Paige Witherow/Danielle Rutherford.

Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen picked La and Hoch as the players of the match.

“Chantel and Mallory are two of our senior leaders, and they set the tone for the day early on with their play,” Gundersen said.

The Riders next hosts Kingston on Friday.

Klahowya 4, Port Angeles 3

SILVERDALE – The Roughriders suffered their first loss of the season against the Eagles on Tuesday.

“Klahowya has some really experienced, year-round players, and we couldn’t quite get over the top,” coach Brian Gundersen said.

“Our girls really battled. I was proud of our effort, but Klahowya was a little too much for us.”

Winning for the Riders were Shayla Bohman at No. 3 singles, beating Ashley Brynes 6-3, 6-1, and the No. 3 and No. 4 doubles teams.

Laney Boyd/Caylie Cook were picked as the players of the match at No. 3 doubles as they beat Meagan Spiegel/Brittany Hassett 7-5, 6-3.

“Laney and Caylie were in a pretty tight match against a good team today and seemed to win all the big points,” Gundersen said.

“They played well in pressure situations, and I was impressed with their teamwork.”
