PORT ANGELES — It took one month for Haleigh Harrison to make her mark on the Sequim girls track and field team.
The freshman jumper broke a school record on her way to three individual victories, as the Wolves beat the Port Angeles and Olympic girls in Thursday afternoon’s three-way Olympic League meet.
Sequim narrowly edged rival Port Angeles, scoring 84 points to the Roughriders’ 81. Olympic was third with 20.
“I’m just very pleased with the girls,” Sequim coach Brad Moore said. “It doesn’t happen very often that you beat Port Angeles . . . in Port Angeles.”
The Trojans claimed the boys meet with 72 points, with Port Angeles once again close behind with 66 and Sequim in third at 43.
That was despite the fact that the Riders, led by double-winners Mehdi Ettehadulhagh and Parley Scott, won more events (9) than the Trojans (7).
(Meet results are on Page B3.)
“I thought we performed very well,” Port Angeles coach Dwayne Johnson said. “I’m really pleased with our individual and team performances.
“You’ve got to take your hat off to Sequim.”
Especially to Harrison, who won the long jump, triple jump and high jump for a Sequim girls team that claimed first place in 11 of 18 events.
Her mark in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) broke a one-year-old school record in the process, eclipsing Lauren Garrett’s 5-1 leap in 2009.
Harrison’s long jump (16-5) and triple jump (32-8) marks were also personal bests, not to mention the top marks on the North Olympic Peninsula this spring (see today’s scoreboard on Page B2).
“I guarantee when we clean her up in the triple jump she’s going to go two to three feet farther,” Moore said. “She just has amazing hops for a young girl. We’re really luck to have her.”
Samantha Whiteside was also a triple-winner for the Wolves. The senior won the 100 and 200 meter dashes as well as the pole vault.
Anna LaBeaume (shot put and discus) and Audrey Lichten (1,600 and 3,200) each won two individual events, with the former fighting through an illness.
Cece Stevenson was the lone double-winner for Port Angeles after taking both hurdles events.
“That was the first time she was able to run them both because of a hamstring [injury],” said Johnson, whose Rider girls also won two of three relays.
The Riders also took the 4-by-200 and 4-by-400 relays, with Sequim losing the 4-by-200 after getting disqualified.
“I was actually sweating it when we got DQ’d in the [4-by-200] relay,” Moore said. “Fortunately that didn’t end up being the difference in the meet.”
Olympic’s John Wojtech was the star of the boys meet, claiming the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 races.
Scott and Ettehadulhagh each won two events for the Riders, and Nathan Hofer added a personal best in the high jump with a 6-2.
The Rider 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 relays also claimed victories, with Scott and Ettehadulhagh running for each.
“We’re really pleased about our 4-by-100 and our 4-by-400,” Johnson said.
“They are both [person bests] for the year for us.”
Frank Catelli was the Sequim boys’ lone winner. He won the javelin with a throw of 156-7.
Forks in five-way
ROCHESTER — The small Spartan track and field team competed against Castle Rock, White Salmon, Ilwaco and Rochester on Thursday.
Three boys placed as double-winner Roman Hurst was the highlight of the meet for Forks.
Hurst was first in the triple jump with a personal-best 39 feet and he claimed first in long jump with a distance of 17-8.
He also was second in high jump with a height of 5-4.
Brian Santman, meanwhile, was runner-up in the 1,600 in a personal best time of 5:03.
Scott Reed captured third place in the 300 hurdles with a personal best of 44.2.
Shane Whiteagle, a freshman, had personal marks in four events as he took second in shot put with a throw of 38-2, second in the 200 with a time of 24.88, third in the 100 in 11.87 and he anchored the 4×100 relay team in 47.3.
Kristen Larsen came through for the Spartans in the girls meet as she claimed first place in the 3,200 in 14:45.
Forks has only four girls on the track team.

Forrest Emmett had his first varsity shutout as the goalkeeper and earned 11 saves in the game.

FORKS — The Spartan put the finishing touches on a perfect week with their third straight shutout victory Thursday.
Forks outscored its opponents 11-0 in its three wins this week, with all three of the Spartans’ goals on Thursday coming in the first half.
“Tonight we played really good as a team,” Forks coach Brian Bower said. “The defense, they have played well all week.
“We’ve kind of turned a page, and I’m just hoping we can keep pushing.”
Part of the turnaround could be attributed to the return of last year’s leading goal scorer, Wilson Avila-Luna.
The junior added scored fourth goal since rejoining to the lineup Monday.
“It seems like the confidence level of my team has come up now that he is playing,” Forks coach Brian Bowers said of Avila-Luna.
“He’s a pretty dynamic player, and he creates opportunities all over the field.”
Forks (5-2 in league, 6-4 overall) begins next week with back to back road games, starting with Monday’s tilt at Montesano and followed by Tuesday’s at Toledo.

TACOMA — The Cowboys offense sputtered and could not capitalize on an outstanding defensive effort against the Eagles on Thursday.
Senior Trevor Richardson, playing goalkeeper for the first time in his career, allowed only a 12th minute goal on nine attempts.
“This was an evenly matched game,” coach Kevin Coate said. “We had a couple starters out with injuries, but played really well.”
The Cowboys (0-5 league, 3-6 overall) host Kingston on Saturday

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redskins were no match for the Knights in an Olympic League match-up Wednesday.
Trailing 2-1, Port Townsend (1-4 league, 3-5 overall) missed a golden opportunity to tie the score before halftime.
“The [Bremerton] goalie mishandled the ball and we had a straight-on shot from about 18 yards, but the shot hit the cross bar,” coach Patrick Kane said.
Harrison Hodson scored an unassisted goal for the Redskins in the first half and Ryan Crace added an unassisted goal in the second.
“The game was really a lot closer than the score indicated,” Kane said.
“The score wasn’t a good indicator of how we played. We just couldn’t find the goal.”

AGNEW — The Mountaineers bounced back from a rough loss earlier this week by doubling up the Fire on Thursday at the Storm King soccer fields.
Montana Collins accounted for more than half of the Mountaineers’ goals, scoring a career-high seven in the victory.
After playing to a 1-1 tie through one quarter, the Mountaineers opened things up with a 4-1 second frame.
The goals piled up after that, with Jacob Dostie adding four goals of his own and Albert Barnier four assists.
“I was so proud of the way the whole team played today. It was a true team effort,” Mountaineers coach Dave Farrington said.
“I was kind of worried going in to the game after the not so good game against Klahowya on [Tuesday] night [a 9-3 loss], but this really is a great group.
“They bounced back and by far played their best game of the season.”
The Mountaineers will face a stiff test in their next match, with 6-0 Lake Washington coming to town for a nonconference game on Saturday.
Girls Tennis Sequim loses two
The Wolves lost two Olympic League matches this week.
On Tuesday, North Kitsap nipped Sequim 4-3 in Poulsbo and on Wednesday Kingston beat the Wolves 6-1 in Kingston.
Sequim, now 1-3, next will play at Chimacum/Port Townsend on Friday.
The Wolves won the top two singles matches and the No. 1 doubles competition against the Vikings but North Kitsap had better depth to win everything else.
Sequim’s Kyla Hall beat Stephanie Bird 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Serena Okamoto defeated Ashton Asquith 6-2, 6-3 at second singles.
At No. 1 doubles, Stacy Hanson and Katrina Chan of Sequim beat Bryana Bohl and Kelsey Grunigen 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
Hall earned the lone victory against Kingston, beating Corinne Sudduth 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Hanson and Chan had a close match at No. 1 doubles, losing 6-4, 7-5 to Olivia Gueva and Maddie Miller.
