TACOMA — Sumner knocked Sequim into the bi-district consolation bracket with a 5-1 first-round baseball victory at Franklin Pierce High School.
The Wolves now must win three games to advance to regionals.
Sequim’s Kyler Johnston took a shutout into the sixth inning but he didn’t receive enough support from the Wolves’ offense and defense in Tuesday’s game.
The score was tied 0-0 after five but Sumner scored four runs in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh.
Johnston took the loss but much of Sumner’s offense was the result of miscues by Sequim fielders.
“He played a great game, but we misplayed some balls,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said.
“And we just didn’t hit the ball well.”
The offense finally produced a run in the bottom of the seventh when Taylor Washburn crossed home plate but it was too little, too late for the Wolves.
Sequim next plays on Saturday in the loser-out consolation quarterfinals when it faces the loser of Wednesday’s Port Angeles and Interlake championship quarterfinal game.

In Tuesday’s game, Kingston took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning.
The Bucs scored once in the first but the Wolves took the lead with two in the top of the third.

Multiple hitters for Sequim were Bailey Rhodefer, who went 2 for 4, and Columbia Haupt, who also was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
