SPORTS: Sequim nips Port Angeles by two strokes in boys golf showdown; other prep reports

SEQUIM — Ryan O’Mera and Sequim’s superior depth were a little too much for archrival Port Angeles in the showdown for the possible Olympic League boys golf championship Wednesday.

The Wolves barely beat the Roughriders by two strokes, 417-419, at The Cedars at Dungeness GolfCourse.

Sequim improves to 5-0 in league competition while Port Angeles, the previous league leader, falls to 5-1.

“The greens were rolling true, but at a very fast pace that made it challenging for many of the players,” Sequim coach Bill Shea, the director of golf and general manager at Dungeness, said.

O’Mera was the only golfer to shoot below 40 on both the front and back nines as he remains undefeated on the year.

He shot 37 and 36 for a 1-over 73. The 36 was the lowest nine-score on the day.

“Ryan had a great round,” Shea said.

O’Mera was playing even-par the whole match but bogeyed the final hole for the ending 1-over score.

Joe Barnes of Port Angeles was runner-up four strokes behind at 77, shooting 40 and 37.

Barnes, a junior who was medalist for the Riders in their past two matches, finished strong with birdies on three of the last four holes.

O’Mera and Barnes were the only two to break 80 in the match.

PA takes 3 of top 4

The rest of the Riders’ Big Three of Garrett Payton and Jordan Negus captured third and fourth, respectively, as Port Angeles dominated the top of the leaderboard.

Payton ended with an 80, 41 and 39, while Negus struggled on the day with an 81, 42 and 39.

Alex Atwell of Port Angeles and Sequim’s Jesse Francis tied for fifth place with 83 each.

Francis, normally the No. 6 player who has competed in just two or three varsity matches, had the key score in the match with his 83, seven strokes better than his handicap.

The Wolves were trailing by 13 points with one match still in the course when Francis came in with his 83 to seal the victory.

‘We’re right where I thought we would be in the beginning of the season — we’re top-heavy with Ryan O’Mera at the top with a lot of average scorers close to each other on the bottom,” Shea said.

“We get a nice early lead with Ryan [at No. 1], and we get padding at the end of it.”

Sequim golfers came in first, tie for fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth while Port Angeles claimed second, third, fourth, tie for fifth, and 10th.

O’Mera remains undefeated on the year with medalist honors in all six Sequim matches.

In an early nonleague match, O’Mera edged a Central Kitsap player by a stroke, his closest competition of the year. Central Kitsap is a Class 4A school while the Wolves compete at 2A.

Otherwise, O’Mera has been untouchable so far.
