CHIMACUM — The powerhouse Cowboys, one of the favorites to win the Class 1A state title this year after taking second in state last season and returning almost the entire team, gave a clinic to the 2A Buccaneers in nonleague action Wednesday.

The Cowboys (1-0) went ahead 5-0 in the first two innings, let Kingston come back to tie it 5-5 in the fourth but blew it open with six runs in the fifth for an 11-5 lead.

A three-run rally in the top of the seventh made it 12-8 but ace left-hander Landon Cray came in with the bases loaded to get the final out and earn the save.

Quinn Eldridge started the game, striking out one and allowing six hits while Austin McConnell (1-0) threw the next three innings to pick up the win, fanning four and allowing a hit, a three-run homer.

Cray also led at the plate by going 2-for-5 with three RBIs while Quinn Eldridge went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, Lucas Duket was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a three-run homer and Michael Nordbergh went 2-for-3.

The Cowboys now will travel to North Kitsap at Poulsbo today for another battle against a bigger school, weather permitting.

“We did pretty well against Kingston,” Chimacum first-year coach Jim Dunn said.

“We hit the ball fairly well; we had some timely hits.”

It’s good for the Cowboys to play the bigger schools, Dunn said.

“It’s an eye-opening experience,” he said. “It’s a lot different than playing our league opponents.

“It’s nice to get some competition.”
