TACOMA — Sequim High School’s Anna LaBeaume claimed a state title in the girls shot put at the Class 2A meet at Mount Tahoma High School.
The junior lived up to her billing as the top seed in the event, and school record holder, with a throw of 40 feet, 11¼ inches. She was the only thrower to top 40 feet in the entire 2A field.
LaBeaume took up the shot only by chance early on in her high school career. She was challenged by a group of Sequim boys during a practice one day to see how far she could throw it. She turned out to be a natural. And now, she’s also a state champion.
Sequim’s girls were in second place in 2A with 14.50 points after one day of competition. They trailed only Archbishop Murphy (18 points).
