SPORTS: Speedy Crescent to host perennial state power Lummi on Saturday; other prep football previews

The Crescent Loggers are looking to make their mark on the Northwest Football League scene.

Other than their Oct. 19 matchup with Neah Bay, Saturday’s game against perennial 1B powerhouse Lummi is their best chance to do just that.

The Blackhawks remain ranked in The Associated Press 1B poll (No. 4), but are coming off a big loss to Neah Bay.

In order to successfully rebound, they’ll have to out-duel the undefeated Loggers, who are loaded with speed and power.

Friday’s games

Kingston

at Sequim

The Wolves and Buccaneers have been two of the big surprises in the Olympic League, though both for contrasting reasons.

Sequim (0-3, 0-5) will be playing its second home game, which also happens to be its second-to-last home game of the season.

Kingston (2-1, 2-3) is trying for its first ever win over the Wolves. In the five games between the two schools, Sequim has outscored the Buccaneers 239 to 54.

Tulalip Heritage

at Neah Bay

This looked like a much better matchup before last week.

Not only did the AP No. 2 Red Devils (1-0, 5-0) take down nemesis Lummi last week, which served as a clear reminder of Neah Bay’s 2011 state championship, but Tulalip (0-1, 3-1) was convincingly handed its first loss of the season by Lopez Island, 46-8.

Eatonville

at Chimacum

Cowboys (1-1, 2-3) running back Mel Thornton is having one of the best individual seasons on the North Olympic Peninsula with 705 yards and eight touchdowns.

Last week, the Cruisers (2-0, 4-1) destroyed Bow Valley College out of Calgary, Alberta, 49-6.

Port Angeles

at Bremerton

The Roughriders (0-3, 0-5) hope to ignite an offense that is averaging just 7.2 points per game this season by continuing the effective passing game that made an appearance during the final drive of last week’s loss against Klahowya.

Bremerton (3-0, 4-1) is the surprise leader of the Olympic League after defeating North Kitsap.

Rainier at Forks

The Spartans (0-2, 2-3) return home looking to rebound from their 42-7 loss to Montesano against the winless and offensively challenged Mountaineers (33 points in five games).

Quilcene

at Muckleshoot

The Rangers (1-0, 2-3) have good chance at a three-game winning streak — after beginning the season 0-3 — against a Muckleshoot Tribal (0-1, 0-4) team that has struggled to field a full team of healthy players.

Saturday’s games

Clallam Bay

at Lopez Island

A promising start by the Bruins (0-1, 2-2) has been sidetracked by losses to Quilcene and Crescent, and unfortunately the Lobos (1-0, 3-0) should provide another stiff test this week.

Port Townsend

at Cascade Christ.

At Sumner High School

Led by Jacob King, Matt Cain, Tim Russell and Mitiku Little, the young and hungry Redskins (2-1, 3-2) hit the road to face what will likely be their toughest opponent of the season.

The Cougars (2-0, 4-1) are the class of the Nisqually League and are currently ranked No. 6 in the AP 1A poll.
