TUKWILA — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team finally ran into an offense it couldn’t contain.
Top-ranked Walla Walla cut short the Pirates’ bid for an NWAACC championship, beating them 1-0 in Sunday afternoon’s title match at Starfire Sports Complex.
Tournament MVP Kaylie Winston scored a goal on a breakaway in the last minute of the first half, handing the Pirates (17-3-3 overall) their first loss in 16 matches.
It was the first goal allowed by the Pirates in 425 minutes of play.
They had come into the match with four straight shutouts and 12 on the season.
Walla Walla (22-0-1 overall) finished unbeaten for the second straight year and won its third straight NWAACC championship in the process.
Peninsula, meanwhile, fell just short of a title in just its second season in existence.
If not for a number of clutch saves from goalkeeper Krystal Daniels, things could have been a lot worse for the Pirates.
Walla Walla continually threatened the Peninsula goal in the first half, with one shot ricocheting off the cross bar and another the post.
The Warriors put seven shots on frame total, with Daniels saving all but one of them.
The sophomore from Kent finished with nine saves on the match.
Peninsula pushed ahead much of the second half in an attempt to find an equalizer.
Sophomore midfielder Jackie Rodgers had one shot pushed away by diving Walla Walla goalkeeper Courtney Hancock in the 62nd minute.
One minute later, Peninsula’s Tabitha Bare headed a ball just over the post.
