SPORTS: Wilder Baseball goes 2-1 in Portland for strong showing

PORTLAND — Wilder Baseball had a strong showing at the 12-team Portland Baseball Club Classic, going 2-1 in official competition, losing only to host powerhouse Portland in Sunday’s final.

The good showing comes just in time as Wilder hosts its own popular 14th annual Dick Brown Memorial Wilder Firecracker Classic starting Friday and ending Monday with the tournament championship game.

Eight teams, including the Sequim Baseball Club, will be vying for the Firecracker championship.

All Firecracker games will take place at Civic Field in Port Angeles, with four contests scheduled every day. More on this tourney later in the story.

In Portland, Wilder even got a bonus game in against the strong Vancouver, Wash., Cardinals, when that team went looking for an opponent to play a noncounting game.

“We were able to play all of our younger kids,” Wilder manager Rob Merritt said.

“I’m glad we played that game because we were able to get four games in. And our younger players got a chance to play.”

Stormy weather during the weekend played havoc with the official tournament, cancelling some games and moving other contests to venues with artificial turf.

Wilder lost the bonus game 9-8 to the Cardinals but Merritt was happy with how well his younger players performed.

“Our younger kids played well against a tough team,” he said.

Wilder played Vancouver on Friday afternoon before the tourney started at Alder Creek Middle School in Milwaukie, Ore.

The Wilder youngsters led 4-1 in the first inning and 4-3 in the second but the Cardinals went ahead 5-4 in the third.

Wilder tied it in the top of the fourth but four runs in the bottom of that inning gave the Cardinals all the runs they needed.

Chase Jangula of Port Angeles started the game on the mound and went four innings while Sequim’s Jake Hudson threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit.

Port Townsend’s Kyle Kelly smacked a solo home run in the game while George Marinan of Kingston went 2 for 4, scoring two runs and knocking a run in.

Brian DeFrang and Wesley Giddings, both of Port Angeles, went 1 for 2 each with DeFrang scoring a run.

Larson Chapman hit a double and had two RBIs.

Wilder went 2-1 in the tournament, opening play by shading the Spokane Heat 3-2 on Friday night at Alder Creek Middle School.

The North Olympic Peninsula team, with players from the North Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas, had only three total errors in its first two games to start out strong defensively.

Wilder also had solid pitching and good hitting during the weekend.

“We bonded better on this trip,” Merritt said.

“We have guys from all over the area playing together for the first time. We’re still trying to figure out the identity of the team.”

Two Wilder pitchers combined for a three-hitter against Spokane, while Wilder managed eight hits in the pitching duel.

Kelly (3-1) went 6 1/3 innings, giving up the two earned runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out two.

Cole Uvila of Port Angeles threw one pitch to earn the save. His lone pitch was hit into a double play.

Easton Napiontek went 2 for 2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, while Clark Rose went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The fields were getting pretty sloppy by the end of this game, and the tournament was turned into a single-elimination affair Saturday.

Wilder stayed alive Saturday by nipping the Albany, Ore., Rockets 6-5 in eight innings on the turf at West Linn High School in West Linn, Ore.

The Rockets scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to send the game into extra innings.

Wilder scored once in the top of the eighth and held Albany in the bottom half of the stanza to earn the win.

Giddings pitched the first four-plus innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits while walking none and fanning one.

Rose threw the fifth inning, while Uvila (1-0) came in to pitch the final three innings, allowing just one run on four hits while walking one and striking out three.

Napiontek and Uvila led at the plate, with both going 2 for 4 each.

Uvila rapped a triple, scoring two runs and hitting one in, while Napiontek had a double and scored a run.

Marcus Konopaski of Port Angeles had the big hit in the game, going 2 for 4 with a bases-loaded double, knocking in three runs in the second inning to give Wilder a 3-0 lead.

Rose went 2 for 3 and scored two runs, while Marinan went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

On Sunday, Wilder lost 7-6 to host Portland in a regulation seven innings.

This was Wilder’s only sloppy game during the weekend.

Two errors in the fifth inning helped Portland score five runs and lead 7-2.

Wilder had a total of three mistakes in the game.

“I don’t know what happened,” Merritt said about the sloppy defense.

“Maybe we were a little tired.”

Napiontek pitched the first five innings, giving up seven runs but only four earned on seven hits, two walks, a hit batter and two strikeouts.

Hudson threw the final inning, giving up a hit while walking one and hitting one batter.

Napiontek hit a solo home run, while Kelly went 2 for 4 with a double and RBI.

Marinan also smacked a solo home run, and went 2 for 4 on the day. Uvila had two RBIs.

Connor Gauge, Chapman and Emmitt Davis all had consecutive hits as pinch hitters in the game.

The Firecracker Classic opens with Sequim Baseball Club taking on the Washington Nationals at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

Wilder opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Victoria Selects.

Pool play goes the first three days, and then placement games take place Monday, with the title game set for 5:30 p.m.
