SPORTS: Youthful Forks drops baseball doubleheader to Rainier; other prep reports

FORKS — The inexperienced Forks Spartans lost a baseball doubleheader to Rainier in Southwest Washington League action Monday.

The Spartans, 0-6 in league and 1-7 overall, lost the first game 14-0 but were competitive in the nightcap, losing 9-5.

“We’re having some growing pains,” Forks coach Jerry DeFord said.

The team has a mixture of young players and older athletes who have been away from the game.

Sophomore Michael Dean hit a triple in the second game and also pitched three solid innings in relief.

He gave up just one run in the three innings.

Jon Gimlin and Sam Dickson both had two hits each in the second game.

The Spartans next play at Toledo on Thursday.

Chimacum 14, Life Christian 1

TACOMA — The Cowboys breezed in the Nisqually League game Monday.

Chimacum (6-1, 9-2) was ahead 6-0 after two innings and 12-0 after three to win in five.

Three players knocked in 12 runs as the Cowboys feasted on Life Christian.

“Life Christian is not a very good team,” coach Loren Bishop said. “The best thing you can say is it was a league win.”

Devin Manix had a grand slam and a double as he brought home six runs. He went 2-for-3.

Dillon Dukek also had a home run and a double with four RBIs as he went 2-for-4 and Lucas Dukek was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Sophomore Joe Modispacher (2-1) went the distance on the mound as he struck out nine, walked three and allowed just two hits.

The Cowboys next play at Seattle Christian on Wednesday.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders remained perfect on the year and didn’t drop a single set for the second match in a row Monday.

“So far, our girls have done a good job getting off to a fast start and that makes the rest of the match a little easier,” Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen said.

The Riders are now 5-0 on the year.

Shayla Bohman was named the player of the match as she beat Patty More 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

“Shayla has such a positive attitude while she is on the court, and her play reflects that,” Gundersen said.

“She doesn’t get down when she hits a bad shot, and she has really solidified our No. 3 singles spot.”

The Riders travel to Klahowya today.

Sequim (2-3) lost just one set in the match, at No. 2 doubles.

FORKS — Mental mistakes hurt the Spartans again as they played competition ball but couldn’t get over the hump in the Southwest Washington League game Monday.

“We gave the first game away,” coach Scott Justus said.

Rainier had seven unearned runs in the 8-2 win.

“Mental errors are hurting us,” Justus said.

Jillian Raben went 5-for-9 in the doubleheader with two RBIs and three stolen bases while Gwen Gillette was 3-for-6 with a triple, two RBIs and a sacrifice bunt.

The Spartans were up 8-1 in the second game but couldn’t hold on.

Forks (0-6, 1-7) next plays at Toledo on Thursday.

Chimacum 16, Life Christian 0

TACOMA — The Cowboys easily won the five-inning Nisqually League game Monday.

Chimacum had a 9-0 lead in the first inning and 14-0 in the second and never looked back.

Arlie Petrick (3-0) pitched a no-hitter for the Cowboys, striking out six in five innings.

Samantha Benner earned a grand slam for five RBIs, three runs scored and going 2-for-3 at the plate while Lacey Carter and Tara Peters both were 2-for-2 in the game.

Both of them also had two RBIs and two runs each.

Cailey Snyder earned three RBIs with a double and Kaylie Castillo had two RBIs.

The Cowboys (6-0, 7-2) next travel to Seattle Christian on Wednesday.

Girls Golf Port Angeles 119, Klahowya 45

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders had their highest stableford team score in the past four years at Peninsula Golf Club on Monday as standout Emily Cook returned to the team for the first time this year.

Cook returned after knee surgery.

“It’s good to have everyone back,” coach Mike DuPuis said. “It gives us confidence.”

Port Angeles improved to 3-1 in the Olympic League and 3-2 overall.

Tracie DuPuis took medalist honors with a score of 43 on nine holes for a stableford score of 30 points.

“Tracie played very well,” Mike DuPuis said.

Cook was just two strokes behind with a 45 for 28 points.

Ev Greer wasn’t far behind with a 47for 26 points.

Lauren Coventon shot 52 for 21 points while Madison Baumann had 14 stableford points.

The Riders next play today at White Horse Golf Club against Kingston.

Sequim third of 20 teams at invite

BURLINGTON — The Wolves captured third place at the 20-team Burlington Invitational at Skagit Golf & Country Club on Monday.

“Next to state, this is probably the biggest high school invitational in western Washington,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said.

“This is the best we have done since I have been here in four years. This is awesome.”

The Wolves had two players tie for first place in two competitions. The format calls for three players from each team to play 18 holes and anther three play nine holes.

Standout senior Zoei Zbaraschuk tied for first in 18 holes with a score of 77. She took second after losing on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Lisa Doan, meanwhile, tied for first on nine holes with a score of 45. She also settled for second when she lost on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Sequim’s Kim Duce scored 98 on 18 holes while Hailey Estes had 116.

Ashley Morton scored 58 for nine holes.

“It was a big success for us today,” Smithson said.

Boys Golf Port Townsend 126, Sequim 118

SEQUIM — The Redskins won the battle of top boys teams in the Olympic League at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course on Monday.

The Redskins stayed perfect on the year at 4-0 while the Wolves fell to 5-2.

Number-3 Port Townsend player Sean Anderson won medalist honors with a score of 76 on 18 holes for 32 stableford points.

Sequim ace Ryan O’Mera claimed second with 79 for 29 points while Port Townsend ace Ronnie Harrell was right behind with a score of 80 for 26 points.

For Sequim, Steve Loerlein shot 83 while Mallory Maloney hand an 84 and Casey Torres shot 85.

“We have been playing pretty solid through the middle,” Sequim coach Vic Quinet said.

The Wolves next host Oak Harbor of Coupeville today at Dungeness.
