STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT: Three area golfers compete on second day

PA’s Anderson 20th after two days

LIBERTY LAKE — Port Angeles’ Nate Anderson had a great first day at the boys 2A state golf championship at Liberty Lake Golf Course and appears poised to finish in the top 20.

Anderson shot a two-day score of 162 (76-86). His first-day 76 on Tuesday was tied for ninth place in the state, but he slipped in the standings after the second day. He was 20th at press deadline with not all the final scores in.

Anderson was the only Port Angeles boy to make the cut to the second day Wednesday, but two Olympic Peninsula girls made it.

Leading the boys, and leading by a lot, was Burlington-Edison sophomore Wyatt Brownell, who dominated the first day with an 8-under-par 64 in the first round. That was seven shots ahead of second place.

Burlington-Edison appears well on its way to a boys state championship as five of the top 12 golfers in the state after day one were from that school.

Port Angeles’ Sky Gelder shot an 87, missing the cut of 83. Teammates Max Gagnon (90) and Reid Schmidt (91) also missed the cut.

Girls

Claire Osterberg of Port Angeles and Ava Johnson of Sequim, golfing at nearby MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake, both made the cut for the second day.

Johnson shot a 198 (96-102), good for 36th place, while Osterberg shot an even 200 (94-106) at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake. Johnson finished in 36th place and Osterberg 39th.

Just missing the cut, which was 97, for the second day was Sequim’s Emily Post, who shot a 100. Her teammate Raimey Brewer shot a 109 and Port Angeles’ Autumn Wilson-Rowland shot a 114.

Leading the girls after the first day was Jayme Dwight of Ephrata, who shot a 72.
