TACOMA — Port Angeles’ Gracie Long ran a personal best, cracking 5 minutes in the 1,600-meter run to win the state 2A championship in that event.
Long won the race with a time of 4 minutes, 58.72 seconds, beating Kristen Garcia of Sedro-Woolley in a sprint to the finish by 0.37 of a second.
Port Angeles’ Maddie Dougherty finished 11th in Thursday’s race with a time of 5:11.64.
On Saturday, in Long’s final day of running high school track for Port Angeles, Long and Garcia dueled again in the 3,200. Long finished second in the 3,200 with a time of 11:00.89. Garcia won with a time of 10:55.26. Dougherty cracked the top 10, finishing 10th at 11:27.91.
Long’s sister, Millie, came in third in the 300-meter hurdles on Saturday with a time of 45.57.
The Long sisters have tallied 24 team points for the girl Roughriders so far with the team’s 4×400 race (both sisters run on that team) one of the last events left on Saturday.
Four Sequim athletes have also placed in their events. Riley Martin came in third place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.30. Tyrell Edge of Franklin Pierce won the race with a time of 14.90 seconds.
Sequim’s Riley Cowan was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 182 feet, 6½ inches, a personal best. His throw was just eight feet behind the winning distance of 190-8 by Nicholas Oesterling of Bellingham.
Sequim’s Fischer Jensen was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.03 Saturday. Murray Bingham for the Wolves was seventh Saturday in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.52.
1A, 1B Meet
At the 1A and 1B meet in Cheney, the best showing so far has been from Forks’ Cole Baysinger, who came in fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.90.
Kaylin Signor of Clallam Bay finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 4-6 and Aubry Botkin of Port Townsend who finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.04 seconds. That time is well off Botkin’s season-best, but overall times in this race and other sprints in Cheney were a bit slow as there was a headwind up to 6 miles an hour.
Kayla Winck of Neah Bay finished seventh in the shot put with a distance of 33-2¾, while her teammate Mateo Garcia finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.01. Ryan Strid of Clallam Bay finished seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time 12.31 seconds.
Final results of the 1B, 1A and 2A track meets will be published in Monday’s Peninsula Daily News sports section.
