STATE TRACK & FIELD: Sequim’s Murray Bingham, Port Angeles’ Millie Long are state champions

The Sequim boys’ track and field team is in position to possibly win a team championship with events still going on early Saturday evening.

TACOMA — Murray Bingham of Sequim is the state champion of the 800-meter run while Port Angeles’ Millie Long joined her sister as a state champion by winning the 300-meter hurdles.

Both the Sequim boys and the Port Angeles girls are both in the running for state 2A team championships with the 4×400 relay races to be held after press deadline.

Bingham won his race with a time of 1 minutes, 55.937 seconds. His teammate Alec Shingleton came in fifth with a time of 1:59.208.

Shingleton picked up some big points for Sequim late Saturday afternoon by finishing second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.01, finishing out of first place by 0.12 of a second.

Long, who came in seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (15.61 seconds) Thursday and 10th in the long jump, won the 300-meter hurdles on Saturday with a time of 44.65 seconds. She came in to that event with the No. 1 2A girls’ time in the state and joins her sister Gracie Long, who was the 1,600-meter state champion last year for Port Angeles.

Sequim’s Riley Martin came within 0.001 of a second of winning the state championship Friday in the 110-meter hurdles in perhaps the closest finish possible.

Martin came in second place in the 110 hurdles finals with a time of 14.910 seconds. The winner was Tyrus Thomas of Pullman, who was clocked with a time of 14.909.

Martin’s amazing result is just part of a successful meet so far for Sequim and Port Angeles athletes.

Bingham also finished third in the 1,600 meters Thursday with a time of 4:21.73. Bingham ran in the 4×400 relay late Saturday after press deadline in an event the Wolves were expected to place in.

Sequim’s Fischer Jensen finished eighth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.801. Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt finished fifth in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 58.88.

Port Angeles’ Lauren Larson had a busy state meet, placing in three distance events. She finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:14.47, less than one-half of a second out of first place. She also finished second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:54.11, just 7 seconds out of first. She finished third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:03.04. Larson single-handedly collected 22 points for the Port Angeles girls.

Port Angeles’ Myra Walker picked up a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 36-6¾.

As a team, the Sequim boys were in first place Saturday afternoon with 45 team points as the team had placed in nine total events so far. Pullman has 40 and Tumwater 38. The Port Angeles girls were first Saturday afternoon with 39 points, three points ahead of second-place Bellingham. The Roughrider girls have placed in six events so far.

Like the Sequim boys, the Port Angeles girls have a 4×400 relay team.
