PORT ANGELES — Elisha Winck earned three first-place finishes for Neah Bay at the Class 1B Tri-District track and field championship meet at Port Angeles High School.
Winck, Cameron Buzzell, Chris Martinez and Cole Svec teamed up to take first and set a Tri-District meet record in the 4×100-relay with a time of 45.01 seconds.
“Neah bay was outstanding at the race,” Crescent coach Darrell Yount said. “Impressive team. Loaded with sprinters.”
Winck also won the long jump (19 feet, 3.5 inches) and the triple jump (40-09.75) at Thursday’s meet.
Crescent freshman Paul Frantz also set a Tri-District record with a time of 2:03.91 in the 800-meter run.
Mount Vernon Christian and Evergreen Lutheran shared the boys team championship.
Mount Vernon Christian won the girls title. The Clallam Bay girls took second and had 10 state qualifiers in 12 events.
The Bruins had the North Olympic Peninsula’s other two Tri-District champions: Jennica Maines took first in the triple jump with a distance of 31-01.5, and Marissa May, Kendra Anderson, Miriam Wonderly and Atokena Abe won the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 54.72 seconds.
The top six boys finishers and the top seven girls advance to this week’s 1B state championships at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
The state meet has expanded this year from eight to 16 athletes in each event and will run three days — Thursday, Friday and Saturday — instead of two.
The North Olympic Peninsula has 36 state qualifiers.
Crescent had all 15 athletes who qualified for Tri-Districts advance to state.
“Our motto at Tri-District was leave no one behind,” Loggers coach Darrell Yount said.
The Crescent boys had eight state qualifiers in eight events.
Senior captain Martin Waldrip qualified in each of the four events in which he competed: the 1,600, 3,200, triple jump and he was the anchor of the 4×400 relay.
Frantz, Zach Fletcher and Jordan Scott ran with Waldrip in the 4×400 relay. Jacob Baillargeon was injured but, according to Yount, is expected to be cleared to run the relay at state.
Along the relay and his win in the 800, Frantz also qualified in the 1,600, in which he began competing only within the last month.
Scott also qualified in the 110-meter hurdles and fell less than two-tenths of a second shy of also qualifying in the 300 hurdles.
All three of the Crescent boys throwers qualified for state: Neil Peppard and Wyatt McNeese in the shot put and discus, and Cody Wolfer in the javelin.
For the Crescent girls, junior Ryan Lester qualified in four events.
She broke her own school record in the 300 hurdles (50.67 seconds) and set a season-best in the 100 hurdles (17.50 seconds).
Lester also qualified in the triple jump and anchored the 4×100 relay.
Yount was hoping the 4×100 team of Hannah Lee, Kristin Frantz, Kayla Olsen and Lester could squeeze there way into districts with a seventh-place finish, but the ended up taking third.
“They crushed all the hand-offs, and Ryan Lester flew right by everyone,” Yount said.
Ashara Dodson also qualified in four events for Crescent: high jump, triple jump, discus and javelin.
“It’s rare to see those combinations,” Yount said. “I’ve never seen anyone qualify in that combination.”
Shannon Williams qualified in the shot put and discus, McKenzie Brannon did so in the javelin and Olsen qualified in the 800.
Along with the 4×100 relay, the Clallam Bay girls qualified for state in the 4×200 and 4×400.
May, Maines, Anderson and Abe took second in the 4×200, while May, Anderson, Inga Erickson and Molly McCoy finished third in the 4×400.
Maines also qualified for state in the high jump.
Abe added the 200-meter dash and the long jump to her relay state qualifications, while McCoy made state individually in the high jump and 300 hurdles.
Anderson also qualified in the 200, May qualified in the 100 and Erickson will compete at state in the 400. Mariah LaChester will be a state alternate with the 4×100 relay.
Kaylin Signor will get the most out of her trip to Cheney after qualifying for state in the 800, 3,200 and 1,600.
Sami Metcalf was the Bruins’ lone qualifier in the throw events, making it in the shot put.
For the Clallam Bay boys, eighth-grader Clayton Willis set personal records in the 100, 200 and high jump at Tri-Districts.
He qualified for state in the 100, high jump and long jump.
Justin Messinger qualified for state in the discus.
The Neah Bay boys have two other individual qualifiers joining Winck and the 4×100 relay team at state.
Buzzell made state in the 100 and 200, and Svec made it in the high jump.
For the Neah Bay girls, Faye Chartraw qualified for state for the third straight year in the shot put. She took second to Muckleshoot’s Alyssa Vaiese.
This season, Chartraw and Vaiese rank first and second, respectively, in the state.
The Red Devils also will send the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, both of which were run by Vonte Aquirre, Hannah Olson, Amanda Gagnon and Tiffany Smith.
Three Spartans going to state
VANCOUVER Wash. — Forks qualified three athletes for the Class 1A state meet during the District 4 championships at McKenzie Stadium.
Kari Larson is the lone Forks girls representative after claiming the district title in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 28.74 seconds at Thursday’s meet.
Larson also qualified for state in the 1,600 with a time of 5:33.48.
On the boys side, Austin Pegram will compete at state in two running events for the Spartans.
Pegram placed third in the 1,600 with a 4:43.16 and was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:04.92.
Miguel Morales also qualified for state for Forks after throwing the discus 131-02 and finishing third.
The boys 4×400 relay team of Allan Dias, Nate Williamson, Cole Baysinger and Pegram set a personal record by 12 seconds but just missed out on a state berth, finishing fifth with a time of 3:45.33.
Only the top four move onto state.
“[I] couldn’t be prouder of this wonderful Spartan team,” Forks coach Pam Gale said.
“[I’m] looking forward to a great state performance by all. It’s time to bring home the hardware.”
The Spartans’ boys team finished 11th and the Forks girls 10th at the 13-team district meet.
Eatonville won both the boys and girls titles.
The Class 1A State championship meet is held at Eastern Washington University this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Long, Barry win titles at 2A districts
BELFAIR — Gracie Long of Port Angeles and Alex Barry of Sequim each won Class 2A District 2/3 championships during the first day of the meet at North Mason High School.
Long claimed the girls 1,600-meter run title for the Roughriders with a personal-record time of 5 minutes, 17.16 seconds.
Zoe Owens also made state for Port Angeles, taking sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 34 feet, 2.75 inches.
Port Angeles’ Peter Butler set a personal record and also qualified for state by taking second in the boys 1,600 with a time of 4:25.
Barry won the boys javelin crown for Sequim with a throw of 176-07.
He will be joined at state by teammate Jackson Oliver. Oliver cleared 6 feet in the high jump to finish second.
Five Redhawks win at 1A districts
BELFAIR — Koby Weidner blazed to a district title-winning time of 11.30 seconds in the 100-meter dash to help put the Redhawks in the lead after the first day of the Class 1A West Central District championships.
Four other Port Townsend boys also qualified Friday for the state meet, three earning district championships during the meet at North Mason High School.
Mark Streett won the 400 with a time of 52.01 seconds; Jeff Seton’s throw of 158 feet, 4 inches in the javelin earned him a title and Seren Dances’ leap of 41-03.75 won the triple jump.
Ryan Clarke qualified for state after a runner-up finish in the 1,600 with a time of 4:30.41.
The Redhawks’ 4×100-meter relay team also booked a trip to state.
Zach Wilson, Cameron Constanine, Streett and Weidner won the district title with a time of 45.03 seconds.
The Port Townsend boys led the district meet by seven team points over Cascade Christian after the first day.
