PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls’ Olympic League track and field win streak is at six after the Roughriders beat Sequim 83-76 and Olympic 90-69 in a double dual at Port Angeles High School.
The Sequim boys defeated Port Angeles 110-33 but lost to Olympic 78-73. The Trojans also beat the Riders 105-42 to sweep the meet.
The Port Angeles girls racked up five wins in the running events.
Jolene Millsap again won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. She has won the two sprints at every league meet this season.
Millsap also ran with the Riders’ first-place 4×200-meter relay team along with Ivy Ly, Cassidy Hodgin and Ciara Gentry.
The Riders had a one-two finish in the 1,600, with Elizabeth Stevenson taking first and Willow Suess finishing second. Stevenson’s time of five minutes and 49 seconds is the best on the North Olympic Peninsula this season.
Suess also won the 800.
Port Angeles (6-2 in the Olympic League) also had two wins in the field events.
Senior Brittany Norberg, who has placed first or second in the javelin in every meet she has participated in this year, won the event at Thursday’s meet with a throw of 106 feet and 7 inches. Teammate Lenora Hofer took second and was right behind Norberg with a 106-05.
Zoe Owens-Clawson had the Riders’ other win, taking the triple jump with a 32-05.
Sarah Hutchison won two events for the Sequim girls, the 100-meter hurdles and the pole vault.
The Wolves (6-2 in league) had the top four finishers in both events.
Katelyn Rogers, Mattie Clark and Molley Early followed Hutchison in the 100 hurdles.
Emily van Dyken, Abigail Hansted and Ashley Westrom finished second through fourth, respectively, in the pole vault.
Hutchison and van Dyken each had meet-best vaults of 8 feet, but Hutchison won by virtue of tiebreaker.
Sequim added a one-through-three finish in the 400, with Waverly Shreffler winning the event, Hannah Hudson finishing second and Mercedes Woods coming in third.
The Wolves’ other individual winner was Emily Webb, who took first in the 3,200 with a time of 13:05.08.
Sequim also won the 4×400 relay with a team of Gretchen Happe, Shreffler, Hudson and Hutchison.
Boys Results
Sequim’s Oscar Herrera continued to dominate the hurdles, winning the 110 and 300 Thursday. His time of 16.29 seconds on the 110 hurdles is a new area-best.
C.J. Daniels and Brendon Despain each had distance-run wins for the Wolves, Daniels winning the 1,600 and Despain taking the 3,200.
Alex Barry added a dominating win in the javelin with a throw of 161-01. Teammate Brendan Lauritzen placed second with a 134-06.
Josh Cibene earned a win in the pole vault over Port Angeles’ Sam Burton. Both vaulted a Peninsula-best 12 feet, but Cibene won the tiebreaker.
Dylan Chatters took second in the 400 for Sequim (7-1), but ran 52.68 seconds, which is the best on the Peninsula this season.
Nick Fritschler was the Riders’ lone winner, taking the 800 run in a time of 2:09.69.
Port Angeles (2-6) had a few second-place finishers, including Peter Butler in the 1,600 and 3,200 and Matt Robbins in the shot put.
PT’s Johnson wins twice at league meet
PORT TOWNSEND — Jewel Johnson and Skyler Coppenrath with double winners for the Redskins at an Olympic League three-way meet with North Kitsap and Kingston at Blue Heron Middle School.
Johnson won the girls 100-meter and 200-meter dash to lead the Redskins, who had six winners.
Rebecca Stewart won the 100-meter hurdles and freshman Makaila Deen won the 300-meter hurdles.
Marta Penzar was the javelin champion, eclipsing the 100-foot mark for the first time with a personal-best 101-09, and Trish Reeves won the high jump.
The Redskins’ 4×100-meter relay team of Reeves, Johnson, Stewart and Deen took second at Thursday’s meet but ran a North Olympic Peninsula season-best time of 53.05 seconds.
For the Port Townsend boys, Coppenrath won the 300 hurdles and the triple jump.
Ryan Clarke was the only other winner, taking the 1,600 in 4:49.86.
Crescent at Evergreen 1A league meet
HOQUIAM — The Class 1B Loggers went up two classifications to compete in an Evergreen 1A League meet against Hoquiam, Onalaska, Ocosta and Montesano.
Ryan Lester was a double winner for the Crescent girls. She edged teammate Devanie Christie in the 100-meter hurdles and won the 300 hurdles by more than a second.
Christie was the javelin winner by nearly 3 feet with a throw of 103 feet and 9 inches.
The Loggers’ other champion was Meghan Shamp, who took the discus with a 95-11 throw.
Travis Walker and Quenton Wolfer finished first and second, respectively in the boys javelin.
Walker threw a personal-best 163-01, which is second on the North Olympic Peninsula and in the Class 1B state rankings, trailing only Taholah’s Jon Jackson.
Wolfer also finished third in the discus.
“We rolled around a few kids in different events and made it a bit of a recovery meet situation on the heels of a tough competition that night before at [the North Olympic League championships], but all in all a great trip against some great competition,” Crescent coach Darrell Yount said.
The Loggers begin the postseason with the North Olympic League sub-district meet at Crescent High School on Wednesday.
The top four placers from each event will qualify for the Bi-District Championship qualifier next week in Stanwood.
“So all the preliminary meets have finally led the athletes to this ultra-competitive postseason, where everything is one the line in each event with very little room for hiccups,” Yount said.
“Exciting times. This is what the track and field world lives and breathes for.
“Typically, the top athletes tend to really take off and separate themselves from the rest of the field. So very rewarding for an elite group; perhaps a bit frustrating for the rest, but that’s track and field.”
Forks boys third at Evergreen meet
RAINIER — Alan Ensastegui helped the Spartans take fourth at the eight-school Evergreen 1A League meet at Rainier High School.
Ensastegui won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:09.11 and placed second in the 1,600.
Miguel Morales took second in the discus for the Spartans with a North Olympic Peninsula season-long throw of 132 feet and 1 inch.
Andrew Armas added a runner-up finish in the javelin.
Forks also claimed four of the top seven shot put marks, led by Jonny Law’s third-place finish, followed by Morales at fifth place, Jake Claussen at sixth and George Buck at seventh.
For the Forks girls, who finished sixth, Kari Larson was the lone winner, taking the 800 in a time of 2:37.95.
Erin Weeks placed third in the high jump and second in the triple jump and Tristen Williams finished third in the 1,600.
Chimacum fourth at Nisqually meet
ORTING — The Cowboys two teams finished fourth at the five-school Nisqually League meet at Orting High School.
The Chimacum boys were led by three third-place finishes, including Eoin Hartnett, who tied for third in the 200-meter dash, Sam Golden in the high jump and Ross Henley in the long jump.
Taking fourth for the Cowboys were Hartnett (100-meter dash), Golden (300-meter hurdles) and Trevon Noel (shot put).
Kyah McKinlay’s third-place showing in the shot put led the Chimacum girls. McKinlay beat out teammate Mechelle Nisbet, who took fourth.
Other fourth-place finishes for the Cowboys where Alisha Leoso in the 100, one spot ahead of teammate Sam Cerna, Nisbet in the javelin and Alyssa Hamilton in the long jump.
