TRACK AND FIELD: Postseason revs up in big way for area teams

JOYCE — Cameron Buzzell handled the sprints and Isaac Jay Brunk the long-distance runs as the Neah Bay boys ran down a North Olympic League Sub District Championship against Clallam Bay and host Crescent.

The Red Devils totaled 128 team points, the Loggers had 49 and the Bruins tallied 40.

On the girls side, the Bruins’ Jennica Maines, Atokena Abe and Hannah Olson all won multiple events in Thursday’s meet as Clallam Bay earned a team title with 112 points and Neah Bay (60) edged Crescent (59) for second.

Buzzell swept the sprints, setting a personal-record time of 11.54 seconds in the 100-meter dash, winning the 200 in 24.26 and taking the 400 in 54.79.

Brunk claimed the 1,600 with a time of 5:28.92 and won the 3,200 in 11:50.2.

Wyatt McNeece won two events for the Loggers, setting a personal best mark of 42 feet, 11 inches in the shot put and hurling the discus 118-6.

Sophomore Ryan McCoy had a big day for the Bruins, winning the 300 hurdles in 47 seconds and clearing 5-6 in the high jump for another victory. McCoy also set a personal record distance of 37-5 in the shot put to finish second and was second in the javelin (124-9).

Abe set two personal records in her wins: she threw the shot 31-1 and leaped 33-2 1/2 in the triple jump to help the Bruins cruise to a title.

Maines won the 100 in 13.75 seconds and was tops in the high jump after clearing 5 feet.

Olson set a personal record in the long jump (14-10 1/2) and in the 300 hurdles (55.84).

Abe, Maines, Molly McCoy and Miriam Wonderly combined to lead the Clallam Bay 4×100 relay team to a win (54.71) and Abe, Olson and Wonderly joined Kendra Anderson for a win in the 4×200 in 1:57.09.

McCoy, Anderson, Olson and Wonderly finished off a relay sweep for the Bruins, claiming the 4×400 in 4:48.36.

The Neah Bay girls had no multi-event winners, but Kayla Winck set a personal record in the discus of 97-9 to edge Crescent’s Ashara Dodson (96-2) for the win.

The top three in each event, plus the next two best times/distances on the boys side and next three best times/distances on the girls side, advanced to thursday’s Class 1B Tri-District meet at Coupeville.

Forks at Evergreen League meet

MONTESANO — Forks athletes earned five individual titles at the Evergreen League Championships held in rainy weather at Montesano High School on Friday.

The Spartans will send five boys and nine girls to compete in the Southwest Washington District IV meet Thursday at Woodland High School.

The top four finishers in the sprints, hurdles, intermediate and distance running events advanced to the district meet along with the top six in the field events.

Cole Baysinger and Marissa Bailey each won two events for Forks in Friday’s meet.

Baysinger qualified for district competition in four events.

He won the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 2 inches and was tops in the discus with a throw of 139-7, nearly three feet better than Tenino’s Jack Burnham.

Baysinger was second in the triple jump with a mark of 38-4 and set a personal record throw of 45 feet while finishing third in the shot put.

Caleb Peters qualified for district by setting a personal record of 129-8 in the javelin.

Luke Dahlgren (124-6) and Peyton Rondeau (121-7) were third and fifth in the discus and will throw at the district meet.

Matthew Larson finished fourth in the 3,200 meters (11:31.04) and will run at districts.

Overall, the Forks boys finished fifth (53 points). Montesano’s 160 points edged Hoquiam (159) for the league title.

The Spartans’ girls swept the intermediate and long-distance running events at the meet.

Bailey won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in 2:32.55 and 5:37.22 and junior Enid Ensastegui set a personal-best mark of 12:18.92 to win the 3,200.

Melisa Galindo was fourth in the 3,200 (14:00.5) and will run at the district meet.

Madison Carlson set a personal record time of 1:04.73 while finishing second in the 400 run.

Ella Damron was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 57.99 to earn a district invite and Azalea Ramos finished fourth in the shot put (27-9 1/2) and was fifth in the javelin (86-10).

Chelsea Biciunas ended up fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 28-9 and will leap at districts.

The Spartans’ 4×400 relay team of Bailey, Carlson, Sylvia Torres and Annhelica Wells qualified with a third-place finish in 4:37.75.

Overall, Forks finished fourth with 72 points. Elma won the league meet with 154 points and Montesano was second with 146.
